The Gatekeepers

Believe it or not, the two best films on Brussels screens right now are both documentaries. For the past two weeks, the Aventure has been showing the horrifying The Act of Killing, in which ageing Indonesians proudly replay how they murdered one suspected communist after another in the mid 1960s. Meanwhile, at the Galeries you can see the disconcerting The Gatekeepers. Here too, the protagonists have blood on their hands. Six former heads of Shin Bet talk about the working methods, successes, and failures of the shadowy anti-terrorist service responsible for Israeli security. Avraham Shalom, for example, admits ordering the beating to death, after their capture, of two Palestinians who had hijacked an Israeli bus in 1984. “Forget about morality when you’re dealing with terrorists,” is his dubious justification. Shalom is the oldest; the younger chiefs are a bit less harsh. They have all grown milder over the years – and a lot more critical of Shin Bet’s usefulness and operations. “The tragedy,” concludes Ami Ayalon, “is that we win nearly every battle but we are losing the war.” Adds Yuval Diskin, “A terrorist for one person is a freedom fighter for another.” Jewish extremists form a major danger. It’s not the broad outline of what you learn that is dumbfounding, but the many concrete details that instantly raise scores of questions. The one annoying thing is that you have to remain suspicious: these gatekeepers know what they are saying and why.

In Aventure draait al twee weken het ijzingwekkende The act of killing, met oude Indonesiërs die fier nadoen hoe ze in het midden van de jaren 1960 vermeende communisten hebben vermoord. In Galeries draait het verbijsterende The gatekeepers. Ook hier kleeft er bloed aan de handen van de protagonisten. Zes voormalige chefs van Shin Bet vertellen over de werkwijze, successen en mislukkingen van de schimmige antiterroristische dienst die voor de veiligheid van Israël instaat. Zo geeft Avraham Shalom toe dat hij opdracht gegeven heeft om twee Palestijnen, die in 1984 een Israëlische bus gekaapt hadden, in gevangenschap dood te slaan. “Vergeet moraal als het over terroristen gaat,” is zijn foute smoes. Jongere chefs zijn iets milder. Allen zijn ze met de jaren milder geworden en kritischer over het nut en de werking van Shin Bet. “De tragedie is dat we bijna elke veldslag winnen, maar de oorlog verliezen,” concludeert Ami Ayalon. “Wat voor de ene een terrorist is, is voor de andere een vrijheidsstrijder,” weet Yuval Diskin. Groot gevaar komt van joodse extremisten. Niet de grote lijnen slaan met verstomming, maar de vele details die meteen tientallen vragen opwerpen. Het enige vervelende is dat je achterdochtig moet blijven. De ‘poortwachters’ weten wat ze waarom zeggen.

Dans le stupéfiant The Gatekeepers, à l’affiche à Galeries, six ex-patrons du Shin Beth racontent le mode opérationnel, les succès et les échecs du service secret qui veille à la sécurité d’Israël. Avraham Shalom avoue, lui, avoir donné l’ordre de faire exécuter en prison deux Palestiniens qui avaient détourné un bus israélien. « Il faut oublier la morale quand il s’agit de terroristes », est son excuse bidon. Shalom est le plus vieux, les plus jeunes sont un peu plus soft. Tous se sont adoucis au fil des ans et sont devenus plus critiques par rapport à l’utilité et au fonctionnement du Shin Bet. « La tragédie, c’est que nous gagnons presque chaque combat mais que nous perdons la guerre », conclut Ami Ayalon. « Ceux qui pour les uns sont des terroristes, sont pour les autres des combattants pour la liberté », reconnaît Yuval Diskin. Un grand danger vient des extrémistes juifs. Plus que les grande lignes, c’est ici la foule de détails concrets qui suscitent d’emblée des dizaines de questions. Le seul ennui, c’est qu’il faut rester méfiant. Les « gardiens » savent ce qu’ils disent et pourquoi.
