Jack the Giant Slayer

Shall we just give away that the Grand Finale is one with lots of destruction and a heroic battle? It’s not just one big, unfriendly creature, but a whole army (horde? pack?) of cannibalistic giants that storms the king’s castle. Brave knights and warriors try to fend them off as best they can. Fans will already have surmised from the trailer that the film’s climax is a fight like this. Those who are not yet familiar with Jack the Giant Slayer now know that the film diverges somewhat from the famous fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk. We were not totally blown away by the script, or the sets, 3D, or CGI for that matter. Not that there is anything wrong with them. More importantly, this digitalised fairy tale does actually deliver on the promise of real Adventure. We couldn’t say the same of either of the Snow White films released last year. This fantasy film, for a change, is not aimed at young adults and adults who are mentally still teenagers, but at families with ten-year-olds. Or eight, if they can appreciate the humour of squished eyeballs and jokes about the best way to cook human flesh. Don’t worry about coming in late, the film only really gets started once the beanstalk begins its climb to the land above the clouds.

Niet één groot onvriendelijk wezen, maar een volledig leger (horde? roedel?) kannibalistische reuzen stormt op het kasteel van de koning af. Dappere ridders en soldaten proberen hen naar hun beste vermogen tegen te houden. De fans hebben uit de trailer toch al kunnen afleiden dat zo’n groot gevecht de climax is. En wie nog niet vertrouwd is met Jack the Giant Slayer, weet bij deze dat de film enigszins afwijkt van het bekende sprookje Jaak en de bonenstaak. Zwaar onder de indruk zijn we niet van het scenario, noch van de decors, de 3D of de CGI. Maar er is ook niets mis mee. Belangrijker is dat dit gedigitaliseerde sprookje wél naar Waar Avontuur ruikt. Dat konden we van de twee Sneeuwwitjes van vorig jaar niet zeggen. Deze fantasyfilm is voor de verandering niet op maat geschreven van jong-volwassenen en volwassenen die hun volwassenheid ontkennen, maar op maat van gezinnen met jongens van tien jaar. Acht als ze al kunnen lachen met een oog dat geplet wordt en grapjes over de beste cuisson van een stuk mensenvlees. Te laat komen mag, de film schiet pas echt uit de startblokken wanneer de bonenstaak aan zijn klim naar het land boven de wolken begint.

Ce n’est pas une créature hostile mais toute une armée (horde ? meute ?) de géants cannibales qui se précipite sur le château du roi. Des soldats et des chevaliers courageux essaient du mieux qu’ils peuvent de les retenir. En visionnant la bande-annonce, les fans ont de toute façon déjà pu déduire qu’un combat épique de ce genre constituait le point culminant du film. Et celui qui ne sait encore rien de Jack the Giant Slayer (Jack le chasseur de géants), sait désormais que le film s’écarte un tant soit peu du célèbre conte Jack et le haricot magique. Ni le scénario ni les décors ni la 3D ni les images de synthèse ne nous ont fait forte impression. Mais on n’a rien non plus à leur reprocher. Le plus important, c’est que ce conte numérisé a un bon goût d’Aventure. On ne pouvait pas en dire autant des deux Blanche-Neige de l’année dernière. Pour changer, ce film fantastique n’est pas destiné aux jeunes adultes et aux adultes qui font semblant de ne pas l’être, mais aux familles avec des enfants de 10 ans. 8 s’ils peuvent rire d’un œil écrasé et de blagues sur la meilleure cuisson d’un morceau de chair humaine. On peut arriver en retard : le film démarre vraiment lorsque le haricot magique commence son ascension vers le pays situé au-delà des nuages.
