Little Glory

Although they are a bit shaky sometimes, we are always happy to watch a Vincent Lannoo film. There is always something new about the Brussels-based director’s work. His low-budget film Strass is the only Belgian Dogma film. The black humour and a few good ideas made Ordinary Man anything but ordinary, and the same goes for the pseudo-documentary Vampires. Little Glory, however, is composed in a very different key. Initially, the social drama was set in Wallonia, but thanks to producer John Engel, Lannoo did the filming in North America. The lead role is played by Cameron Bright, who bathed naked with Nicole Kidman in the fantastic film Birth when he was eleven but is probably better-known as one of the Volturi in the Twilight series. He plays a 19-year-old scrounger living in a city depressed by the financial crisis. When his alcoholic father falls from scaffolding and dies, he is left alone with his 7-year-old sister. In an attempt to get the life insurance pay-out, Shawn tries to take care of her. The question is whether he has the right skills and enough love and sense of responsibility to do that. The little girl’s performance is good and the film takes sufficient distance from sentimentality. But the dialogues are toe-curling and the humour Lannoo usually smuggles into his films is completely absent. Not good enough to take note of.

--FR-- Même s’ils sont parfois un peu décousus, nous sommes toujours prêt à voir les films de Vincent Lannoo. Le Bruxellois n’a pas l’habitude de fouler les sentiers battus. Son long métrage à petit budget Strass est le seul film belge du Dogme95. Son humour noir et quelques idées fortes font qu’Ordinary Man est tout sauf ordinaire. Il en va de même pour le pseudo-documentaire Vampires. Little Glory appartient à un registre fort différent. Au départ, ce drame social se déroulait en Wallonie, mais avec l’aide du producteur de Vampires John Engel, Lannoo a tourné en Amérique du Nord. Le rôle principal est interprété par Cameron Bright qui, à 11 ans, a pu se baigner nu avec Nicole Kidman dans le formidable Birth, mais est probablement plus connu comme l’un des Volturi dans la saga Twilight. Il incarne ici un pique-assiette de 19 ans dans une ville durement touchée par la crise. Lorsque son père alcoolo tombe d’un échafaudage et meurt, il reste seul avec sa sœur de 7 ans. Flairant l’argent de l’assurance vie, Shawn veut s’occuper d’elle. La question est de savoir s’il a les capacités, assez d’amour et de sens des responsabilités pour cela. La petite fille joue bien et les grands sentiments sont tenus à distance. Hélas, les dialogues irritent et l’humour que Lannoo introduisait subrepticement d’habitude nous manque. Pas assez fort pour marquer vraiment.

Zijn lowbudgetfilm Strass is de enige Belgische Dogma-film. De zwarte humor en een paar sterke ideeën maken dat Ordinary man allesbehalve ordinair is, net als de pseudodocumentaire Vampires. Little Glory is in een heel andere toonaard gecomponeerd. Aanvankelijk speelde het sociale drama zich in Wallonië af, maar Lannoo filmde met de hulp van Vampires-producent John Engel in Noord-Amerika. De hoofdrol wordt vertolkt door Cameron Bright die als elfjarige naakt met Nicole Kidman mocht baden in het geweldige Birth, maar wellicht bekender is als een van de Volturi in de Twilight-franchise. Hij speelt een negentienjarige klaploper in een door de crisis zwaar getroffen stad. Wanneer zijn dronken vader van de steigers valt en sterft, blijft hij alleen achter met zijn zevenjarige zusje. Met het oog op het geld van de levensverzekering wil Shawn voor haar zorgen. De vraag is of hij daar de capaciteiten en genoeg liefde en verantwoordelijkheidsgevoel voor heeft. Het kleine meisje speelt goed en het sentiment wordt op afstand gehouden. Helaas zijn de dialogen tenenkrommend en missen we de humor die Lannoo doorgaans wel weet binnen te smokkelen. Niet sterk genoeg om op te vallen.
