Margin Call

EN Are bankers the greatest gangsters of all? Honest folk don’t sell products that are worthless the next day. Margin Call is not a documentary about the villainy of the investment banks that caused a financial crisis in 2008, but a bewildering, ominous thriller that dramatises a repulsive aspect of Wall Street. Working late in the office, a young financial analyst discovers that his investment bank is only days or even hours away from ruin. In the course of a hair-raising, fateful night his bosses gradually turn up, one by one. The high point is the arrival by helicopter of the top jackal, John Tuld (Jeremy Irons) – who knows nothing about figures, but earns astronomic amounts of money every year because he has absolutely no scruples when drastic decisions have to be taken. “It’s not called panic if you’re first out the door.” One after another, the characters sell their souls to the devil. There is a certain amount of hot air inMargin Call, but that didn’t spoil the fun for me. The whole ensemble (Jeremy Irons, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore, and Stanley Tucci) makes the most of the dizzying contrast between the personal worries and feelings of their characters and the catastrophe facing the world economy.

Margin Call n’est pas un documentaire sur les vilains tours des banques d’investissement qui ont causé une crise financière en 2008, mais un thriller déconcertant et sombre qui porte à l’écran une répugnante facette de Wall Street. Un jeune analyste financier resté au bureau découvre qu’il ne reste que quelques jours ou quelques heures avant que sa banque ne s’effondre complètement. Au cours d’une nuit fatale qui vous glace les sangs, les patrons rappliquent un à un. Le point culminant est l’arrivée en hélicoptère du chacal suprême John Tuld (Jeremy Irons). Il ne comprend rien aux chiffres, mais gagne chaque année des sommes astronomiques car il ne s’encombre pas de questions de conscience quand il s’agit de prendre des décisions radicales. « Ce n’est pas de la panique si vous êtes le premier à sortir ». L’un après l’autre, ils vendent leur âme au diable. De temps en temps, Margin Call tombe dans l’exagération, mais en ce qui me concerne, ça n’a pas gâché le plaisir. L’équipe (Jeremy Irons, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci) joue avec brio sur le contraste vertigineux entre les préoccupations et les sentiments personnels de leurs personnages et la catastrophe qui va s’abattre sur l’économie mondiale.

Een jonge, op kantoor achtergebleven financieel analist ontdekt dat het een kwestie van dagen of uren is voor de investeringsbank waar hij werkt in de afgrond stort. In de loop van een bloedstollende, noodlottige nacht druppelen de bazen een voor een binnen. Hoogtepunt is de entree per helikopter van opperjakhals John Tuld (Jeremy Irons). Hij heeft geen verstand van cijfers, maar verdient astronomisch veel geld omdat hij geen last heeft van een geweten als de radicaalste beslissingen moeten worden genomen. “It’s not called panic if you’re first out the door.” De een na de ander verkoopt zijn ziel aan de duivel. Af en toe verkoopt Margin call gebakken lucht, maar dat bedierf de pret voor mij niet. Het ensemble (Jeremy Irons, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci) speelt in zijn geheel gretig in op het duizelingwekkende contrast tussen de persoonlijke besognes en gevoelens van hun personages en de catastrofe die de wereldeconomie wacht.
