Riddick

Like every other action hero, Vin Diesel also had a phase in which he felt like he had to prove he could do other tricks too. So we suddenly saw him playing a babysitter in a comedy (The Pacifier) or playing a Mafioso defending himself in court (Find me Guilty) for Sidney Lumet. Since then, however, Diesel has realised that his fans prefer to watch him hit, shout, and jump, and that he can earn much more money doing those things. The bald bundle of muscles with the sepulchral voice is now reappearing in all the sequels of the films that made him famous. Fast & Furious 7 is currently in the pipeline, as is the second xXx. Riddick has already reached number three. But this is one that will only appeal to dedicated fans. There clearly wasn’t an infinite budget for sets and CGI. The film takes too long, and by its third part unfortunately holds no more surprises. But I enjoyed the B-movie fun of the first part. For the umpteenth time, Riddick gets left for dead on an almost completely uninhabitable planet. It brings out the best in this survival machine of the most primitive kind. He tames wild sci-fi wolves and battles giant scorpions for months in the barren wastelands of Mad Max or Conan the Barbarian. And it wouldn’t be the same without the voiceover’s ridiculous quips. There is no point whatsoever to the misogyny, however.

NL -- Zoals elke actieheld heeft ook Vin Diesel een fase gehad waarin hij meende te moeten tonen dat hij ook andere trucjes kon. Plots zagen we hem als kinderoppas in een komedie (The pacifier) of voor Sidney Lumet een maffioso spelen die zichzelf voor de rechtbank verdedigt (Find me guilty). Ondertussen heeft Diesel ingezien dat de fans hem liever zien slaan, brullen en springen én dat hij daar véél meer geld mee verdienen kan. De kaalhoofdige spierbundel met een grafstem duikt tegenwoordig weer op in alle vervolgen van de films waarmee hij beroemd geworden is. Fast & furious 7 zit in de pijplijn, net als de tweede xXx. Bij Riddick staat de teller nu op drie. Het is er eentje voor de fans geworden. Je ziet dat het budget voor decors en CGI niet eindeloos was. De film duurt te lang en weet in het derde deel helaas niet meer te verrassen. Maar in het eerste deel was ik wel mee met de B-filmpret. Riddick is voor de zoveelste keer voor dood achtergelaten op een zogoed als onleefbare planeet. Dat brengt het beste naar boven in deze overlevingsmachine van de primitiefste soort. Woeste scifiwolven worden getemd, reuzenschorpioenen maanden aan een stuk bestreden in de kale decors van Mad Max of Conan the barbarian. Dat de geestigheden uit de voice-over soms ridicuul zijn, hoort erbij, maar de misogynie is nergens goed voor.

FR -- Comme tous les héros de films d’action, Vin Diesel a lui aussi eu une phase où il voulait montrer qu’il pouvait faire d’autres trucs. On l’a vu soudain jouer les nounous dans une comédie (The Pacifier, Baby-sittor en VF) ou incarner pour Sidney Lumet un mafioso qui se défend lui-même au tribunal (Find Me Guilty). Il a depuis compris que les fans préféraient le voir cogner, rugir et bondir et qu’il pouvait gagner là beaucoup plus d’argent. L’armoire à glace au crâne chauve et à la voix sépulcrale revient pour le moment dans toutes les suites des films qui l’ont rendu célèbre. Fast & Furious 7 est déjà sur les rails, tout comme son deuxième xXx. Riddick affiche lui un 3 au compteur. On l’a fait pour les fans. On voit que le budget pour les décors et les effets numériques était limité. Le film est trop long et ne parvient plus à surprendre dans la troisième partie. Mais, dans la première, j’ai bien pris mon pied dans l’ambiance de série B. Pour la énième fois, Riddick est laissé pour mort sur une planète quasiment invivable. C’est exactement ce qui réussit à cette machine de survie de type primitif. On dompte des loups de S.F. rageurs, on combat pendant des mois des scorpions géants dans des décors nus façon Mad Max ou Conan le Barbare. Les traits d’humour de la voix off sont parfois ridicules, mais ça fait partie du lot, mais la misogynie ne sert à rien.
