Dans Morveuse, l’étudiante en art Julia vous emmène en tournée dans un squat, à un concert sanguinolent au Barlok et vous fait vomir vos tripes place Sainctelette… En résumé : une BD hallucinante, émouvante et déconcertante

10/9: Margaret Atwood --novel--

IN THE 1980S, NOT ALL MARGARETS WERE THE SAME. The fact that the Arthur C. Clarke Award winner and Booker Prize-nominated 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale by Canadian author Margaret Atwood still has such an impact today is perhaps an indictment of our society, but it also shows the power of literature (and the Hulu series based on the book).
SO MANY YEARS LATER, THAT MARGARET IS EVERYWHERE. For the launch of The Testaments – the long-awaited sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale – the interview between Atwood and BBC journalist Samira Ahmed at The National Theatre in London is being screened in more than 1,000 cinemas worldwide. In Belgium, Passa Porta will collaborate with Cinema Palace.

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’. In 2016, The New York Times drew up a declaration for Eileen Myles’s 40-year career “in the relative obscurity of punk poet-dom”, out of their own mouth: “I’m a loudmouthed lesbian, which means mainstream invisible.” Nevertheless, a whole new generation has now discovered the cult writer and their work, partly thanks to the Amazon series Transparent, which based one of the characters on them and which quotes their poetry.
WHO’S THEY? Well, Eileen Myles is non-binary and thinks of the human person as a collective. Their first trip to Belgium is a chance for you collectively to support Eileen Myles. Unconventional, multi-layered, contrarian.

2/10: Siri Hustvedt --roman--

CHERCHEZ LA FEMME? Jawel, Siri Hustvedt is mevrouw Paul Auster, de Amerikaanse literaire superster die New York van zijn eigen trilogie voorzag.
CHERCHEZ EENS EEN KEER L’HOMME, ZEG! Precies! Siri Hustvedt is zich in hoge mate bewust van wat het betekent vrouw te zijn. Haar veelzeggend getitelde essaybundel A woman looking at men looking at women getuigt daarvan. En ook Herinneringen aan de toekomst, de roman die ze bij Bozar komt voorstellen, spint een spannend, intelligent web aan vragen rond het geheugen, auteurschap en het recht om te spreken. Kopstoot!

7/10: Mohamed El Bachiri --boek--

DE JIHAD VAN MOHAMED. Molenbekenaar Mohamed El Bachiri verloor op 22 maart 2016 tijdens de aanslag op de Brusselse metro zijn vrouw, maar pleitte tijdens zijn veelbekeken mediaoptredens achteraf tegen haat en voor verbinding en dialoog. Hij verwoordde die boodschap ook samen met David Van Reybrouck in de bestseller Een jihad van liefde.
DE ODYSSEE VAN MOHAMED. Dat is de titel van het nieuwe boek van El Bachiri en Van Reybrouck. Daarin gaat het over het leven voor en na de aanslag. Over zijn jeugd in Molenbeek, over zijn verdriet, over zijn vaderschap en over zijn toekomstvisie op een open, menselijke samenleving. Tijdens dit gesprek geeft El Bachiri een voorsmaakje.

8/10: David Diop --roman--

FRÈRE PLÉBISCITÉ. Vanessa Herzet rencontre David Diop, lauréat en France du Prix Goncourt des Lycéens 2018 et du Choix Goncourt de la Belgique 2019, décerné par des universitaires et étudiants belges.
L’ÂME DESTRUCTRICE DE LA GUERRE. Dans Frère d’âme, l’auteur raconte le parcours de deux tirailleurs sénégalais embourbés dans l’horreur des tranchées de la Première Guerre mondiale. Il évoquera le processus d’écriture de ce roman violent et visionnaire à la langue hantée et devrait réagir aux éloges et aux prix qu’il a suscités dans son pays et à l’étranger.

22/10: Thomas Gunzig --roman--

CAFÉ SERRÉ. Thomas Gunzig reste un des piliers de la scène littéraire bruxelloise. Entre son premier roman Mort d’un parfait bilingue (2002) et sa collaboration avec Jaco Van Dormael sur le scénario du petit dernier de la série de Blake & Mortimer, Le Dernier Pharaon, il a écrit de nombreux romans, textes de théâtre, scénarios et paroles de chansons.
SOUS LES TROPISMES. Pendant dix ans, Thomas Gunzig a travaillé dans la plus belle librairie de Bruxelles, Tropismes. C’est là qu’il présentera son nouveau roman Feel Good. L’extrait révélé lors du Festival Passa Porta était prometteur, avec une bonne dose de son humour noir tellement caractéristique.

31/10: László Krasznahorkai --novel--

A LIVING LEGEND. That is what Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai is. In contrast to his countrymen and colleagues Imre Kertész and György Konrád, who are dead, but who did win the Nobel Prize. Krasznahorkai’s masterpieces The Melancholy of Resistance and Sátántangó were translated very late, but they did ultimately win him the International Man Booker Prize 2015.
A SUBLIME LEGEND. That is what the 2016 apocalyptic novel Baron Wenckheim’s Homecoming is. In his characteristically long sentences, Krasznahorkai writes about a small Hungarian village that pins all its hope on a rich aristocrat’s return from Argentina. Passa Porta has known Krasznahorkai since before his international breakthrough and is welcoming him again now.

5/11: Dina Nayeri --essay--

THE OTHER. We all know a few – and lately the number just seems to keep growing – who bring their troll armies and wall builders to bear at anything that sounds even slightly foreign. As though migration is a mortal sin. Surely by now our first reaction can include giving them the finger.
WTF? Yes, sorry, but it is sometimes just sickening. And that is how Dina Nayeri feels too. The Iranian writer left her homeland when she was eight, spent two years on the run, and moved to the US when she was ten. After two novels, she has now published The Ungrateful Refugee, an expanded version of a viral essay that she wrote for The Guardian. We could go on and on about the prizes she has won and the magazines she writes for, and about how fucking grateful she should be for it, but the point is this: “It is the obligation of every person born in a safer room to open the door when someone in danger knocks.” With a middle finger as an exclamation mark.

ILLUSTRES ILLUSTRATEURS. Bruxelles (et la Belgique) regorge de maîtres du maniement du crayon, du marqueur, des ciseaux ou du pinceau. Et il est stupéfiant de constater le nombre de livres de jeunesse, de dessins de presse, d’affiches, de fanzines et d’objets design que ces artistes produisent. Nous sommes donc ravis qu’un festival flambant neuf leur est consacré.
FAUT-IL VOUS FAIRE UN DESSIN ? Bien sûr ! Via des expos, concerts, ateliers et un salon, les iconoclastes Kitty Crowther, Gerda Dendooven, Fien Jorissen, Fatinha Ramos et Adrien Herda dévoilent leurs œuvres.
