For years rue Antoine Dansaertstraat had its own convivial neighbourhood restaurant, La Cigogne. When it closed a few months ago, a lot of people were worried about what would happen to number 78. But there is good news: its successor, Au Fond, is a welcome newcomer! The people now running the establishment have painted the yellow walls full of text white and taken away the beer taps. Thankfully, however, the place has lost none of its conviviality, as the original wooden panelling has been kept in its entirety. From a sort of bar with food the interior has evolved into a bistro that is a very pleasant spot to pass some time (and where they play good music, which doesn’t happen that often). The small scale of the operation means that the service isn’t over-slick, but it is friendly and personal and the menu offers a modest but well-balanced mix of very diverse dishes, ranging from a lentil salad with halloumi cheese, cherry tomatoes, and coriander (€9) to a piece of cod in mushroom sauce with celeriac purée (€20) to scallops with parsnip, radish, and Granny Smith apple (€14). We started with delectable squid, Basque-style (€10), followed by fillet of venison with witloof/chicons (Belgian endives), quinoa, and an excellent Calvados sauce (€24), which we would have welcomed more generous helpings of. We were very pleased with both dishes, whose simplicity and purity succeeded in getting the best out of these seasonal ingredients. Our dessert, a crema catalana with a deliciously seasoned layer of sugar, was another triumph. The house wines, red and white, both of which we sampled, were excellent (€5 a glass). All in all, Au Fond offers attractive cuisine and very good value for money.
