Bistro Dikkenek

Bistro Dikkenek is located opposite the little Kalevoet/Calevoet train station in Ukkel/Uccle. You can watch the trains go by from the large windows of this corner building. Dikkenek lends its name from the eponymous film by Olivier Van Hoofstadt and Olivier Legrain that is set almost entirely in Brussels. A big photo of the making of the film adorns the space at the back of the café, where there is a high table to eat at during the day and where a stage is sometimes built for concerts in the evening. Incidentally, all the tables in the café bear the name of one of the actors in the film. If they happen to come in and you are sitting at their seats, you can try to have a chat with them. Dikkenek is a wine bar with a considerable selection of European wines on the menu that can be ordered by the glass (3.50 to 4.50 euro each). You can also order tapas or simple meals (boudin, meatballs, salmon tartar…) to accompany the wine. The great asset of this place is its fine interior. The 1970s, orange wallpaper matches the polished wood and black steel of the windows, the tables, and the bar. The light fitting is also striking. It starts from the central column and then spreads out numerous tentacles with bulbs at the end, neatly suspended over each table. The centrepiece, however, is the three-cushion billiard table in the centre of the café that is still frequently used. One thing you also ought to know is that in less than a month, Dikkenek will come under new management. The interior, the kitchen, and the approach will change completely. But we wanted to give you the change to visit the “old” Dikkenek one last time. And we’ll just come back again in a few months.

NL ❙ Bistro Dikkenek is te vinden tegenover het kleine treinstationnetje Kalevoet in Ukkel. Door de grote ramen van het hoekpand zie je de treinen passeren. Dikkenek heeft zijn naam van de gelijknamige film van Olivier Van Hoofstadt en Olivier Legrain die zich bijna volledig in Brussel afspeelt. Een grote foto van de making-of van die film hangt in de ruimte achteraan in het café, waar overdag een hoge tafel staat om aan te eten en waar ’s avonds soms een podium voor concerten wordt geïnstalleerd. Op alle tafels in het café hangen overigens plakkaatjes met de namen van de acteurs uit de film. Als zij toevallig komen binnenwaaien en u zit op hun plaats, kunt u proberen om met hen een praatje te slaan. Dikkenek is een wijnbar met behoorlijk wat Europese wijnen op de kaart die je per glas kunt bestellen (€3,50 > 4,50). Daarbij kun je ook tapas of eenvoudige gerechten bestellen (boudins, balletjes, zalmtartaar…). Een grote troef is het mooie interieur. Het oranje seventiesbehangpapier past mooi bij het gepolijste hout en het zwarte staal van de ramen, de tafeltjes en de toog. Opvallend is ook de verlichtingsarmatuur die vertrekt aan de centrale pyloon en bestaat uit een waaier van staken met aan de uiteinden peertjes die netjes boven alle tafels hangen. Blikvanger is evenwel de driebandbiljarttafel in het midden van het café die nog druk gebezigd wordt. Wat je wel moet weten is dat Dikkenek binnen minder dan een maand van uitbating zal veranderen. De inrichting, de keuken en de aanpak zullen dan helemaal anders zijn. Maar we wilden u toch de gelegenheid geven om nog eens naar de ‘oude’ Dikkenek te komen. Over een paar maanden komen we dan gewoon nog eens terug.

FR ❙ Le Bistro Dikkenek se trouve en face de la petite gare de Calevoet à Uccle. On voit les trains passer par les grandes fenêtres de ce bâtiment qui fait le coin. Le Dikkenek tire son nom du film d’Olivier Van Hoofstadt et Olivier Legrain qui se déroule presque entièrement à Bruxelles. Une grande photo du making of du film est accrochée dans l’espace à l’arrière du café, là où est placée pendant la journée une table pour manger et le soir, parfois, une scène pour des concerts. À toutes les tables sont par ailleurs installées de petites affichettes avec le nom des acteurs du film. Si par hasard l’un d’eux vient faire un petit coucou et que vous êtes assis à sa place, vous pouvez toujours tenter d’entamer la conversation. Le Dikkenek est un bar à vin avec assez bien de vins européens à la carte que l’on peut commander au verre (de 3,50 à 4,50 euros). Avec ça, on peut prendre des tapas ou des petits plats simples (du boudin, des boulettes, un tartare de saumon...). Le grand atout du lieu, c’est le bel intérieur. Le papier peint orange seventies s’associe élégamment avec le bois poli et l’acier noir des fenêtres, des tables et du comptoir. L’armature de l’éclairage, qui part du pylône central et est formée par un éventail de ramures qui se terminent par une ampoule descendant au-dessus de chaque table, est aussi remarquable. Et on ne peut passer sous silence le billard à trois bandes au milieu du café, souvent en action. Mais ce qu’il faut savoir, c’est que dans moins d’un mois, le Dikkenek change d’exploitant. La déco, la cuisine et l’approche seront alors complètement différentes. Mais on voulait vous donner l’occasion de tester « l’ancien » Dikkenek. On y reviendra dans quelques mois pour voir ce que ça donne.
