Café de l'Industrie

Zaterdagplein/place du Samedi is a difficult case. To start with, it is not really a square, but a street. This is not such an uncommon paradox in a car-friendly city like Brussels, but in this case it is an old thorn in our city’s side: people were already referring to this as Zaterdagstraat/rue du Samedi in the nineteenth century. What’s worse is that everyone – even the buildings – seems to turn their backs on it: the Church of Sint-Katelijne/Sainte-Catherine and the Philips building. And the presence of Parking 58 is by no means conducive to how cosy this place could be in theory. It is thus no surprise that bars and restaurants regularly change their appearance and/or owners here. But Café de l’Industrie is a newcomer that we should cherish. It has moved into a large building that has been completely remodelled. And the new style is indeed somewhat industrial but still warm: the concrete and large windows are softened by bleached wood, bright red chairs, and fine decorative elements. There is plenty of room at the long bar and at the many tables that all enjoy the natural light coming in from both sides. There is also space for a terrasse when the weather improves. In other words, this is a definite improvement on what was here before, even though we don’t exactly remember what that was. Café de l’Industrie is actually a bistro and serves simple, affordable dishes. They also have a lunch menu and a happy hour for beers and cocktails, of which there are extensive selections. Finally, both the service and the music are excellent.

NL ❙ Het Zaterdagplein is een moeilijk geval. Om te beginnen is het niet echt een plein, maar een straat. Dat is een paradox die je in autovriendelijk Brussel wel meer aantreft, maar in dit geval is het een oud zeer: al in de negentiende eeuw was er af en toe sprake van een Zaterdagstraat in plaats van een Zaterdagplein. Voorts wordt het Zaterdagplein door iedereen de rug toegekeerd: door de Sint-Katelijnekerk en door het Philips-gebouw. Ook de aanwezigheid van Parking 58 is niet bevorderlijk voor de gezelligheid die er in theorie nochtans wel zou kunnen heersen. Horecazaken in deze buurt veranderen dan ook nogal eens van aanschijn en/of eigenaar. Maar Café de l’Industrie is een nieuwkomer die we moeten koesteren. Het heeft zijn intrek genomen in een groot pand dat helemaal werd heringericht. Dat gebeurde inderdaad in een wat industriële, maar toch warme stijl, waar beton en glaspartijen verzacht worden door blank hout, knalrode zetels en fijne decoratieve elementen. Er is veel plaats aan de lange toog en aan de vele tafels die allemaal van het langs twee kanten invallende daglicht genieten. Er is ook plaats voor een terras zodra het weer wat betert. Een vooruitgang dus tegenover wat hier vroeger was, ook al weten we niet precies meer wat dat ook weer was. Café de l’Industrie is eigenlijk een bistro en serveert eenvoudige en goedkope gerechten, het heeft een lunchformule en een happy hour voor de bieren en cocktails, waarvan een ruime keuze voorradig is. De bediening is uitstekend en de muziek ook.

FR ❙ La place du Samedi est un cas problématique. Pour commencer, ce n’est pas vraiment une place, mais une rue. C’est un paradoxe auquel on est souvent confronté dans Bruxelles-l’amie-des-voitures, mais dans ce cas-ci, le mal est ancien : au XIX^e siècle déjà, on parlait régulièrement de la « rue du Samedi » plutôt que de la place du Samedi. En plus, tout le monde lui tourne le dos, même l’église Sainte-Catherine et le bâtiment Philips. La présence du Parking 58 ne favorise pas non plus la convivialité qui pourrait y régner. Les établissement Horeca du quartier changent d’ailleurs régulièrement de devanture et/ou de patron. Mais le Café de l’Industrie est un nouvel arrivant que l’on accueille avec beaucoup de plaisir. Il s’est installé dans un grand bâtiment qui a été complètement réaménagé. Dans un style en effet légèrement « industriel », mais chaleureux quand même, où le béton et le verre sont adoucis par du bois blanc, des sièges rouge vif et d’élégants éléments décoratifs. Il y a beaucoup de place au grand comptoir et aux nombreuses tables qui reçoivent des deux côtés de la lumière du jour tout au long de la salle. Il y a aussi une terrasse ouverte quand le temps s’améliore. C’est un progrès par rapport à ce qu’il y avait avant donc, même si on ne sait plus exactement ce que c’était. Le Café de l’Industrie se rapproche en fait d’un bistro et sert des plats simples et pas chers. Il y a une formule lunch, une happy hour pour les bières et les cocktails dont le choix est bien fourni. Et qui plus est, le service et la musique sont excellents.
