Café La Pompe

You will find the new Café La Pompe, at a spot not far from the Bareel/Barrière in Sint-Gillis/Saint-Gilles, at a pleasant crossroads where the chaussée de Charleroistesteenweg widens slightly. La Pompe does not refer to the fact that you might be served pump water here, but to the petrol station that used to occupy this location. This is commemorated on the wall behind the bar, where instead of tyres and bottles of oil, you will now see plants, bottles of liquor, and a rusty old Texaco advertisement. The new managers have invested a lot in the building’s transformation. The terrasse is now located where the petrol pumps used to be. The finishing touches are still being done to the interior, but we’re confident everything will turn out great. The combination of wood, brick, concrete, granite, and beautiful furniture attests to good taste. The long bar and tables inside are also bathed in light. We’re curious to see if the large garage door will be kept so that it can be opened in the summer, connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces. La Pompe is open seven days a week from early in the morning until late at night. You can get breakfast or brunch in the morning, lunch at midday (from 11.30 am until 4 pm), and tapas in the evening. The highlight of the lunch menu are the hotdogs that come in several different varieties. Or you can opt for soup or a dish of the day. The menu also features everything you might expect: tea, coffee, beers, etc. This is definitely a successful renovation.

NL ❙ Het nieuwe Café La Pompe vindt u op een plek niet ver van de Bareel van Sint-Gillis, op een aangenaam kruispunt waar de Charleroistesteenweg weer even wat breder wordt. La Pompe verwijst niet naar het pompwater dat u hier te drinken zou krijgen, maar naar het benzinestation dat hier voorheen gevestigd was. Aan de muur boven de toog, waar nu plantjes en sterkedrank staan in plaats van autobanden en bidons met olie, hangt bij wijze van herinnering nog een oud en verroest reclamebord van Texaco. De nieuwe uitbaters investeerden fors in de transformatie van het pand. Op de plaats waar de pompen stonden prijkt nu het terras. Binnenin wordt nog de laatste hand gelegd aan de afwerking, maar we zijn gerust in de goede afloop. De combinatie van hout, baksteen, beton, granito en mooi meubilair getuigt van goede smaak. Ook de lange toog en de tafeltjes binnen baden in het licht. Benieuwd of de grote garagepoort bewaard zal blijven en in de zomer wordt opgetrokken om de binnen- en buitenruimte in elkaar te laten overvloeien. La Pompe is een café waar je zeven op zeven en van ’s morgens vroeg tot ’s avonds laat terechtkunt. ’s Morgens voor een ontbijt of een brunch‚ ’s middags (van 11.30 tot 16.00 uur) voor een lunch, ’s avonds voor wat tapas. Blikvanger op de lunchkaart zijn de hotdogs die in een aantal variëteiten te koop zijn. Een dagsoep en een dagschotel zijn er ook. Verder op de kaart ook voldoende aandacht voor thee, koffie, bieren en al de rest. Hier is sprake van een geslaagde reconversie.

FR ❙ Le nouveau café La Pompe se trouve non loin de la Barrière de Saint-Gilles, sur un agréable carrefour où la chaussée de Charleroi s’élargit à nouveau. La Pompe ne fait pas référence à l’eau pompée que l’on pourrait boire ici, mais à la station d’essence qui y était installée avant. Sur le mur au-dessus du comptoir, là où des plantes et des alcools ont remplacé les pneus et les bidons d’huile, est suspendu en guise de souvenir un vieux panneau rouillé faisant de la pub pour Texaco. Les nouveaux maîtres des lieux ont investi massivement dans la transformation du bâtiment. À la place des pompes, il y a aujourd’hui une terrasse. À l’intérieur, on met encore la dernière main aux finitions, mais on est déjà certain que le résultat sera beau. La combinaison de bois, de brique, de béton, de granito et d’un joli mobilier fait preuve de bon goût. Le long bar et les petites tables baignent dans la lumière. On est curieux de savoir si la grande porte de garage sera conservée et hissée en été pour laisser les espaces intérieurs et extérieurs se mélanger. La Pompe est un café où l’on peut se rendre sept jours sur sept, de tôt le matin à tard le soir. En matinée, on peut y prendre place pour un petit-déjeuner ou un brunch, le midi (de 11h30 à 16h) pour un lunch et en soirée pour quelques tapas. Un des points remarquables de la carte est la liste de hot-dogs, qui se déclinent en plusieurs variantes. Il y a aussi une soupe du jour et un plat du jour. Sur la carte, thé, café, bières et tout ce qui s’ensuit reçoivent aussi une belle attention. C’est ce qu’on appelle une reconversion réussie.
