Cinéma Nova

Bars on the touristy left side of the central lanes in the city centre are relatively scarce. Which is why we would like to draw your attention to the fact that the alternative Cinéma Nova still has an excellent café-foyer. It is only open when films are being shown, but over the next two weeks that is every evening from Thursday to Sunday. In fact, during the Offscreen film festival in March, the theme of which is British cult cinema, the bar will even be decorated with Sixties psychedelica and Mod stuff. Cinéma Nova has been run by a collective of volunteers for more than fifteen years, but is housed in a building that has been associated with theatre and cinema for more than a century. The latter is clearly noticeable. It is a charming ruin with relaxed intimacy. Don’t be intimidated by the dirty collages along the wall of the staircase down to the underground bar. The atmosphere downstairs is loose and unaffected. The space is large and cluttered in a cosy way, or cosy in a cluttered way. No-one will care if you move some tables or chairs around to fit a bigger group. Or you can sink into a comfy armchair. If you’re in luck, a tasty soup or vegetarian meal will be available from the kitchen. The beer list features a number of really good artisanal beers like Blanche de Hainaut, Hercule, Saison Dupont, Moinette, and the beers by Brasserie de la Senne. The soft drinks and hot drinks are also sourced from fair producers. The prices are remarkably democratic for this area. And you’ll also find the occasional exhibition or debate night. Your inner cultural bohemian won’t be disappointed.

NL ❙ In het stadscentrum zijn de kroegen aan de toeristische oostkant van de centrale lanen eerder schaars. Daarom willen we er u op attenderen dat de alternatieve bioscoop Cinéma Nova ook nog altijd over een uitstekend café/foyer beschikt. Het is wel alleen open op de momenten dat er films worden vertoond, maar dat is de komende twee weken elke avond van donderdag tot zondag het geval. Tijdens het Offscreen-festival in maart, dat in het teken staat van de Britse cultcinema, wordt de bar zelfs gedecoreerd met sixtiespsychedelica en mod-toestanden. Cinéma Nova wordt al meer dan vijftien jaar gerund door een collectief van vrijwilligers, maar is gevestigd in een gebouw dat al meer dan een eeuw in het teken van theater en cinema staat. Dat laatste is er ook duidelijk aan te zien. Het is een charmante ruïne met een behaaglijke intimiteit. Laat je niet intimideren door de schunnige collages op de muren die langs de trap naar beneden tot deze ondergrondse kroeg leiden. Beneden heerst er een losse en ongedwongen sfeer. De ruimte is groot en op een gezellige manier rommelig, of op een rommelige manier gezellig. Hier en daar een stoel of een tafel verschuiven om met een groter gezelschap te kunnen samenzitten, is geen probleem. Neerploffen in een fauteuil kan ook. Als je geluk hebt, wordt er juist een lekkere soep of een kleine vegetarische maaltijd gekookt. Op de kaart staan heel wat goede ambachtelijke bieren zoals Blanche du Hainaut, Hercule, Saison Dupont, Moinette en de bieren van Brasserie de la Senne. Ook de frisdranken en de warme dranken zijn afkomstig van de eerlijkste producenten. De prijzen zijn voor deze buurt bovendien behoorlijk democratisch. Af en toe vinden hier ook tentoonstellingen en discussieavonden plaats. De culturele bohemien komt hier altijd aan zijn trekken.

FR ❙ Dans le centre-ville, les bistrots sont assez rares dans le quartier touristique situé à l’est des boulevards centraux. C’est pourquoi nous voudrions attirer votre attention sur le fait que le cinéma alternatif Nova dispose toujours d’un excellent café-foyer. Il est ouvert seulement aux heures où des films sont projetés, c’est vrai, mais ce sera tous les soirs le cas du jeudi au dimanche lors des deux prochaines semaines. À l’occasion du festival Offscreen (jusqu’au 23 mars), placé sous le signe du cinéma culte britannique, le bar est même décoré dans une ambiance psychédélique et mod sixties. Le cinéma Nova est géré depuis plus de quinze ans déjà par un collectif de bénévoles et est installé dans un bâtiment lié au théâtre et au cinéma depuis plus d’un siècle. Et ça se voit. L’endroit, décati et charmant, offre une ambiance intime et agréable. Ne vous laissez pas intimider par les collages graveleux sur le mur le long de l’escalier qui mène à ce café souterrain. En bas règne une atmosphère décontractée. L’espace est grand, agréablement bordélique ou bordéliquement agréable. Pas de problème si on veut bouger ici ou là une chaise ou une table pour accueillir un plus grand groupe. On peut aussi s’affaler dans un fauteuil. Et avec un peu de chance, on aura tout juste préparé en cuisine une délicieuse soupe ou un petit plat végétarien. Sur la carte, on trouve pas mal de bonnes bières artisanales comme la Blanche de Hainaut, l’Hercule, la Saison Dupont, la Moinette et les bières de la Brasserie de la Senne. Les softs et les boissons chaudes viennent eux aussi de producteurs très recommandables. En plus, pour ce quartier, les prix sont relativement démocratiques. On organise aussi ici de temps en temps des expos et des soirées-débats. Le « cultureux bohème » y trouve toujours son compte.
