There is another newcomer on Sint-Katelijneplein/place Sainte-Catherine, which over the last few years has transformed into a veritable Land of Plenty with good restaurants, all kinds of food and drink stands, and with the daily throng around the popular fishmonger’s, tasting delicacies fresh from the sea, standing at the bar and the high tables on the square. But for those who prefer to sit down while they eat, there is a brand new place right next to De Noordzee: Claude. It is a kind of tapas bar where you can select various dishes in small portions. They are not really genuine Spanish tapas, and the epithet “pintxos” on the big chalkboard doesn’t really cover it either: putting something on a piece of baguette does not automatically make it a pintxo. Rather, you are served a motley selection of all kinds of things: from a lentil salad to a serving of lasagne or a stuffed pepper. We thought the Carpaccio of beef with spring onions and red pepper (€6,50) was excellent. The rather dull lentil salad (€3,50), on the other hand, was a sharp contrast to the tasty and spicy tzatziki (€3,50). The pintxo of tuna (€1,50) appeared to be no more than some tuna salad on some bread, and there was nothing particularly special about its taste. The slice of pizza (€2) had clearly been warmed up in the microwave, and it was consequently completely soft. Fortunately, our wine was great, as was sitting at the small tables at the large front window, because the service was friendly but not very professional. Sometimes we had to wait for a while before anyone noticed us, even though at one point we were the only customers. The DJ sets on Thursday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes are apparently lots of fun, but on other days this place could do with some extra schwung. Perhaps it would be better to go and stand up at the neighbours’ and then just to have a glass of wine here...
