The Dominican Lounge Bar

City residents are sometimes aided by a small refuge where they can escape from the hustle and bustle of the streets. Hotel bars are often recommended because they are usually nicely decorated and because they tend not to have crowds of people in them. For a while now, there has been a stylish hotel called The Dominican on the recently renovated, car-free little Leopoldstraat/rue Léopold. The hotel is part of the Carlton group and was named after the Dominican monastery that stood on this spot for centuries. A sign on the building’s façade also informs us that the famous French painter Jacques Louis David – who painted the masterpiece The Death of Marat, which is part of the Museum of Classical Art’s collection – once lived here. For about four years, the hotel has also been the proud owner of a fig tree. Initially, they had taken the fig tree that once stood on the opposite side of the street, but that had to be removed due to planned (but never executed) road works. It was moved to the hotel using a crane, but unfortunately did not survive and was replaced by a huge new tree that is looking very healthy on the spacious patio that is this hotel lounge’s great asset. Indeed, the Lounge Bar not only has a finely decorated part on the street side, but there is also a patio behind the bar that is surrounded by a cloister, complete with cross-ribbed vaulting. Even when the weather gets chillier, at the very least the place offers a view of an unknown, peaceful spot of Brussels. It’s ideal for an afternoon meeting or to discuss the opera you’ve just seen. This Thursday, 7 November, the Lounge Bar is hosting its monthly Domusican live music session.

FR ❙ Le citadin est parfois bien content de trouver un refuge où il peut échapper quelques instants à l’agitation des rues. Les bars des hôtels sont souvent à recommander pour ce genre de situation, parce qu’ils sont en général joliment aménagés et qu’il n’y a pas trop de monde. Dans la petite rue Léopold, aujourd’hui réaménagée et peu fréquentée par les voitures, se trouve depuis un moment The Dominican, hôtel très classe du groupe Carlton baptisé en souvenir du couvent des Dominicains qui a occupé cet endroit pendant des siècles. Sur la façade du bâtiment, un écriteau raconte que le peintre français Jacques Louis David - qui réalisa le chef-d’œuvre Marat assassiné, accroché au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Belgique - a habité ici. Depuis trois ou quatre ans, l’hôtel est aussi l’heureux propriétaire d’un figuier. Au départ, ce devait être le figuier forcé de céder sa place à cause de travaux planifiés (mais jamais réalisés) de l’autre côté de la rue et qui avait été transporté à l’hôtel avec une grue. L’arbre n’a finalement pas survécu à ce déménagement et a été remplacé par un autre, aujourd’hui bien enraciné dans le patio qui constitue le grand atout du vaste salon de cet hôtel. Le Lounge Bar a en effet non seulement une partie à la déco très réussie du côté de la rue mais aussi, derrière le bar, un patio entouré par une galerie de cloître complète avec une voûte à croisées d’ogives. Là, s’il fait un peu plus froid, on a toujours au moins vue sur un petit bout de Bruxelles au côté paisible insoupçonné. Parfait pour un rendez-vous en milieu de journée ou une discussion après l’opéra. Ce jeudi 7 novembre, le Lounge Bar accueille par ailleurs son rendez-vous « Domusican », un concert live mensuel.

NL ❙ De stadsbewoner is wel eens gebaat bij een kleine vluchtheuvel waar hij of zij aan de drukte van de straten kan ontkomen. Hotelbars zijn wat dat betreft vaak een aanrader, omdat ze meestal fijn zijn ingericht en omdat er doorgaans niet al te veel volk rondhangt. In het nu heraangelegde, autoluwe Leopoldstraatje, is al een tijd het stijlvolle hotel The Dominican gevestigd, een hotel van de Carlton-groep dat genoemd is naar het dominicaner klooster dat eeuwenlang op deze plek te vinden was. Op de gevel van het gebouw hangt ook een plakkaat dat ons vertelt dat de bekende Franse schilder Jacques Louis David, de maker van het meesterwerk De dood van Marat dat in het Museum voor Oude Kunst hangt, hier gewoond heeft. Sinds een jaar of vier is het hotel ook de trotse eigenaar van een vijgenboom. Oorspronkelijk was dat de vijgenboom die moest wijken voor geplande maar nooit uitgevoerde werken aan de overkant van de straat, en die met een kraan naar het hotel werd overgeheveld. De boom overleefde deze verhuis uiteindelijk echter niet en moest worden vervangen door een nieuw, uit de kluiten gewassen exemplaar dat nu gezond staat te wezen op de ruime patio die de grote troef is van de lounge van dit hotel. De Lounge Bar heeft inderdaad niet alleen een geslaagd ingericht gedeelte aan de straatkant, maar achter de bar ook een patio die omgeven is door een kloosteromgang compleet met kruisribgewelf. Daar heeft u ook als het wat kouder is altijd op zijn minst zicht op een onbekend, vredig stukje Brussel. Zeer geschikt voor een afspraak ergens halverwege de dag of een nabespreking van de operavoorstelling. Donderdag 7 november heeft in de Lounge Bar overigens ook de maandelijkse Domusican-livemuzieksessie plaats.
