Grand Café

If you ask me, the architectural intervention that transformed the former Monnaie house and the nineteenth-century Écuyer building into Muntpunt is a great success. It is now an open house that offers a cosy welcome and seemingly endless information and culture. At the same time, it is built to withstand the impact of the many visitors it will receive in this central location. Thanks to the fact that you can freely wander all around every floor, the whole building has really been given back to the community. And one draw for said community is the Grand Café at the back of the ground floor. The Grand Café is only just big enough to live up to its name, though of course the name refers primarily to the design. Just like in the rest of the building, you can take a seat here to read the paper, get out your tablet, or catch up with the people you’ve arranged to meet. To all appearances, the Grand Café, with its modern, black-brown to black interior, might be a cosy place in the winter, while in the summer the doors can be thrown open to the low-traffic surroundings. In any case, there is no shortage of drinks and light meals, all served with a smile. And there are little extras like the old Mallemunt posters (Ever Meulen, Charlotte Mutsaers, etc.) that currently decorate the walls, and the menu, which is actually a little book of texts about Brussels by Louis Paul Boon and Herman Teirlinck, and texts about literature by Hermann Hesse. We can only hope that the not-entirely-Dutch-speaking crowd also occasionally finds its way to this beautiful house.

NL ❙ Als u het mij vraagt, is de architecturale ingreep die van het vroegere Monnaiehuis en het negentiende-eeuwse Schildknaapgebouw het Muntpunt maakte, meer dan geslaagd. Het is een open huis geworden dat een gezellig onderkomen en eindeloos veel informatie en cultuur biedt. Tegelijk kan het tegen het stootje dat de vele bezoekers op die centrale plek er dagelijks aan zullen geven. Door het feit dat je zo vrij op alle verdiepingen kunt circuleren, hoort het gebouw echt de gemeenschap toe. Zo is het ook niet moeilijk om achteraan op het gelijkvloers het Grand Café te vinden. Het Grand Café is maar net groot genoeg om die naam te verdienen, maar het gaat natuurlijk vooral om het opzet. Net als in de rest van het gebouw kun je je hier aan een tafeltje zetten om de krant te lezen of de tablet boven te halen, of om bij te praten met de stadsgenoot waarmee je hebt afgesproken. Het is duidelijk dat het Grand Café met zijn moderne, zwart-bruine tot zwarte interieur een knusse plek kan zijn in de winter, terwijl in de zomer de deuren kunnen worden opengegooid naar de autoluwe omgeving. Aan vriendelijk geserveerde drank en lichte maaltijden is er echt geen gebrek. Extraatjes zijn de oude Mallemunt-affiches (Ever Meulen, Charlotte Mutsaers...) die momenteel de muren sieren, en het menu, dat eigenlijk een klein boekje is met teksten over Brussel van Louis Paul Boon en Herman Teirlinck, en over literatuur van Hermann Hesse. Hopelijk vinden ook de niet-helemaal-Nederlandstaligen af en toe de weg naar dit mooie huis.

FR ❙ Si vous voulez mon avis, l’intervention architecturale qui a transformé l’ancienne Maison de la Monnaie et le bâtiment de l’Écuyer datant du XIX^e siècle en Muntpunt est plus que réussie. C’est devenu une maison ouverte qui offre un refuge agréable et une somme infinie d’information et de culture. En même temps, le lieu peut résister aux assauts quotidiens des nombreux visiteurs qui le fréquenteront. La liberté de circulation à tous les étages fait que le bâtiment appartient vraiment à la communauté. Ainsi, il n’est pas difficile de trouver le Grand Café, à l’arrière du rez-de-chaussée. Le Grand Café est tout juste assez grand pour mériter de porter ce nom, mais il s’agit évidemment surtout du projet. Tout comme dans le reste du bâtiment, on peut ici prendre place à une table pour lire le journal, dégainer sa tablette ou faire un brin de causette avec le concitoyen auquel on a fixé rendez-vous. On peut déjà voir qu’avec sa déco moderne allant du brun foncé au noir, le Grand Café constituera un repaire douillet pendant l’hiver, tandis qu’en été, on pourra ouvrir grand les portes sur le quartier à la circulation limitée. Les boissons et les repas légers servis avec le sourire ne font pas défaut. On a droit en prime à d’anciennes affiches du festival Mallemunt (Ever Meulen, Charlotte Mutsaers...) qui parent les murs pour le moment et à un menu qui est en fait un petit livre regroupant des textes sur Bruxelles des écrivains flamands Louis Paul Boon et Herman Teirlinck, et sur la littérature de l’Allemand Hermann Hesse. On espère que ceux qui ne sont pas tout à fait néerlandophones franchiront eux aussi de temps en temps le seuil de cette jolie maison.
