--EN-- We were here years ago, when the café had only just opened. In the meantime, La Belladone changed hands in 2011, but thank goodness the new team has kept almost all its very specific assets. The atropa belladonna is an ambiguous plant because it cannot only be poisonous, but its juice was also used by Italian women during the Renaissance to dilate their pupils and make their eyes twinkle. In Romania it is called matraguna, and is used by women to bring them love and bring down misfortune on their enemies. Belladonna cannot be purchased at this establishment, but the name fits the Eastern-European atmosphere the former owner Didier created. He has since moved over there, but before leaving, he took the time to reveal his secrets to his successors. You will find them on the menu. This place is a real treat for vodka lovers, but Belladone goes one step further with its wide selection of nastoika – vodka perfumed with all kinds of herbs. And on tap, they have Pilsner Urquell, which is imported directly from Bohemia and is not pasteurised. You needn’t be a connoisseur to taste the difference! You’ll also find Boon, Cantillon, Dupont, Corsendonck, and others, and what’s more, there are numerous Eastern-European wines, especially from Romania, but also from Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, as well as eau de vie and other distillates that are known as palinka in Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia. To accompany all this “spirited” drink, you can order anything from tapouski (tapas-zakouski) of pickled gherkins to Suluguni cheese from Georgia or black bread from Lithuania. Add to that the cultural events that are organised regularly in the simply beautiful interior with its impressive woodwork, fine chandeliers, books on the robust mantelpieces, and a view of the overgrown back garden that leads to Russian forests, and you can easily get up to four stars.
