L'Amère à Boire

Did you know that the section of Flageyplein/place Flagey beside the Flagey building is actually called Brouwerijstraat/rue de la Brasserie (“Brewery Street”)? Elsene/Ixelles has a rich brewing history. The presence of the Elsene/Ixelles ponds and the Maalbeek/Maelbeek, which provided the brewers with water, were obviously implicated. The brewers left long ago, however, and it took a while for the Belgian specialty beers to muscle their way into the monoculture of Vedett and Guinness. But for some time now there has been L’Amère à Boire, a great name for a beer café that might be translated into Dutch and English as “Het kan niet (h)op” or “Till the bitter end”. Indeed, hop is the aromatic component that gives many beers their deliciously bitter taste. The café was opened by the same people behind the equally pleasant café La Gougoutte à Pépé, a bit further down the road in Elsene/Ixelles, which also has an extensive beer selection. The menu is written on a chalk board: six beers are available on tap, and about one hundred more are available from the bottle. As far as the interior goes, the most striking thing is the enormous sculpted chandelier. It matches the warm, cosy composition of wood, steel, and brickwork perfectly. The tables are made of sections of tree trunk and empty beer barrels. The walls are decorated with wooden crates of the Ardennes beer Lupulus, which takes its name from the hop plant humulus lupulus. There are also a few snake plants in the window. They are no longer occupied with cleaning the air since the introduction of the smoking ban, so now they just stand around looking old-fashioned.

NL ❙ Wist u dat het stuk Flageyplein aan het Flageygebouw eigenlijk Brouwerijstraat heet? Het maakt meteen duidelijk dat Elsene een groot brouwersverleden heeft. De aanwezigheid van de vijvers van Elsene en de Maalbeek, die de brouwers van water konden voorzien, is daar natuurlijk niet vreemd aan. De brouwers zijn allang vertrokken, en het heeft ook een hele tijd geduurd voor de Belgische speciaalbieren in de buurt een plaatsje kregen tussen de monocultuur van Vedett en Guinness. Maar nu is er sinds enige tijd L’Amère à Boire, een fijne naam voor een biercafé die we naar het Nederlands en het Engels zouden kunnen vertalen als ‘Het kan niet (h)op’ of ‘Till the bitter end’. Hop is inderdaad het aromatische bestanddeel dat vele bieren die aangenaam bittere smaak bezorgt. L’Amère à Boire werd opgericht door dezelfde mensen die een eind verderop in Elsene achter het al even sympathieke café La Gougoutte à Pépé zitten – ook al een café met een ruime keuze aan bieren. Die keuze staat hier op het krijtbord: zes bieren worden van het vat getapt en daarnaast zijn er nog een honderdtal verschillende bieren uit de fles verkrijgbaar. Wat het interieur betreft, valt natuurlijk de monumentaal gesculpteerde luster op. Hij past perfect bij het warme en gezellige geheel van hout, staal en baksteen. De tafels zijn opgetrokken uit schijven boomstam en lege biervaten. Aan de muur hangen wat houten bakken van het Ardense bier Lupulus, dat zijn naam ook al aan de hopplant humulus lupulus ontleent. Voor het raam staan een paar sanseveria’s die zich sinds het rookverbod niet meer hoeven bezig te houden met het zuiveren van de lucht, maar gewoon ouderwets mogen staan wezen.

La présence des étangs d’Ixelles et du Maelbeek, qui pouvaient fournir l’eau aux brasseurs, n’y est bien entendu pas étrangère. Les brasseurs sont partis depuis longtemps, et il a fallu également attendre quelque temps avant que nos bières spéciales nationales se fassent une place entre les monocultures extensives de Vedett et Guinness. Mais maintenant existe depuis un certain temps un bistrot à bières au chouette nom, L’amère à boire, en hommage indirect au houblon, l’ingrédient aromatique qui procure à nombre de bières un goût agréablement amer. Le café a été créé par ces mêmes personnes qui, un peu plus haut à Ixelles, sont derrière La Gougoutte à Pépé, un café tout aussi sympathique, qui offre lui aussi un large éventail de bières. Le choix se trouve au tableau: six bières sortent du fût tandis qu’un centaine d’autres sont disponibles en bouteilles. Ce qui frappe dans la déco, c’est bien entendu le monumental lustre sculpté, qui se marie très bien à l’ensemble chaleureux et cosy, tout en briques, bois et acier. Les tables sont réalisées à partir de troncs un peu tordus et de fûts à bière vides. Aux murs, on retrouve des casiers de la bière ardennaise Lupulus qui tire elle aussi son nom de l’humulus lupulus, appellation latine du houblon. Devant le fenêtre on découvre quelques sansevières qui, depuis l’interdiction de fumer dans les cafés, ne doivent plus servir à purifier l’air mais peuvent se contenter d’être tout simplement délicieusement surannées et old fashioned.
