Borders exist on maps, in landscapes, and in people’s hearts and minds. Pieter Geenen reflects on this in his work about the border between Turkey and Armenia, which has been closed since 1993.

In images made using the pinhole technique, he captures the ghostly reality of vestiges and age-old landscapes. The ruins of a church, the shadow of the immutable Mount Ararat, or the construction of a new Yezidi temple, all bear witness to the geopolitical mutations these historic lands have undergone.

To the blurry photographs, the artist has added moving fragments of sound that awaken many a ghost.
