Bernardo Bertolucci (1941-2018) was introduced to the film world by Pier Paolo Pasolini. He wrote the script for the world-famous Once Upon a Time in the West for Sergio Leone, and in 1970 he definitively established himself as one of the greatest Italian filmmakers with Il conformista, about a conformist aristocrat who becomes corrupted by fascism.

When he died, he was best known for the scandalous Last Tango in Paris, but Cinematek is also screening the astonishingly lyrical epic Novecento as well as The Last Emperor, which won nine Oscars in 1987 and the erotic, nostalgic tribute to youth that made 1968 1968: The Dreamers.
