Indignation is valuable and necessary, but it is also important to treat it cautiously. Unfortunately, this compelling social drama about abuses in a boys’ boarding school in Copenhagen in 1967 does not take the latter point into account, and suffers as a result.

The two brothers who end up there are treated mercilessly, from corporal punishment to sexual abuse. Mikkelsen resists the urge to emphasise the monstrousness of the sadistic manager. The Day Will Come manages to transcend weekend film material, but not itself.
