In his film adaptation of the popular novel by Nicole Krauss, Radu Mihaileanu manages relatively successfully to maintain some clarity in the enormous tangle of themes, but his blind faith in sentimentality, farcical humour, swelling violin music, and slick cinematography do not serve the book.

The History of Love does not show real people of flesh and blood, and that makes it difficult to bear the melodrama. Don't laugh at those who shed a tear. Don't laugh at those who can't take all the sappiness.
