In 1865, young Katherine, is married off to a harsh young man who dislikes her.
In the worst instances, she is actively humiliated, and in the best she is left to her own devices in a bare and cold mansion. Instead of suffering in silence, Katherine takes her fate into her own hands. Florence Pugh plays the dark character with ample restrained rage, director Oldroyd has exchanged the misplaced nostalgia of prim period dramas with almost unbearable oppression. Not everyday fare.
