Just like Brussels, Boston was the victim of an attack by hateful extremists. Patriots Day reconstructs every detail of that attack in the most American way: with a lot of dramatisation and patriotism (though more of the generous than narrow type).

If that doesn't bother you, you'll be entertained. Four years ago, the Chechen brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev made two pressure cooker bombs explode at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. After the brief introduction of the two brothers and a few victims, we immediately see the fatal explosions.

The second half of the film is about the manhunt for the perpetrators. Patriots Day is disappointingly vague about the motives of the criminals. Mark Wahlberg's fictional character, a Boston police officer with a big mouth and a big heart, takes the audience by the hand somewhat artificially. Just like in his last (better) docudramas (Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor), Peter Berg effortlessly holds our attention throughout.
