At the last edition of the Cannes Film Festival, two directors highlighted how monstrous the fashion industry can be. Just like Nicolas Winding Refn in The Neon Demon, Olivier Assayas vacillates between fascination and revulsion.

He shows us a young American who works as a personal shopper for a spoiled supermodel in Paris. Her daily occupation is to collect and return breath-taking garments and jewels. In the evenings, she tries to contact her deceased twin brother.

Mysterious messages on her smartphone are the Achilles' heel of Personal Shopper. We understand that Assayas never intended to make a thoroughbred thriller or ghost film and that he uses genre elements to create an atmosphere of discomfort and secrecy, but even so, these messages just seem clumsy. Fortunately, the plot is just a pretext to film Kristen Stewart in every possible position and in every possible mood. Thanks to her tremendous charisma and talent, that is more than entertaining enough.
