Govinda Van Maele’s film debut ensures that you will never feel comfortable walking in the farmlands of Luxembourg.
A stranger (Frederick Lau) is initially frozen out of the picturesque village until he responds to the advances of the mayor’s daughter (Vicky Krieps). Van Maele successfully evokes an ambiguous, uncomfortable atmosphere and does not let realism constrain creativity.
Gutland is not a bad debut, but if Van Maele really wants to put Luxembourg on the film map, he will have to do even better next time
