The Hungarian composer Béla Bartók made two productions for the stage, and both caused scandal.

The Miraculous Mandarin is less of a fairy-tale than it sounds: the regular client of a brothel – spoiler alert – meets with a violent death. And in Bluebeard’s Castle, blood even drips from the roses in the garden. The double-bill is performed by habitués: conductor Alain Altinoglu and his wife, mezzo soprano Nora Gubisch, have performed this overpowering music in numerous opera houses. Director and ex-milliner Christophe Coppens has apparently – we wrote this before the première – opted for a thriller atmosphere.
