Flagey is reprising eight films by Aki Kaurismäki. The director of Le Havre, The Other Side of Hope, The Man Without a Past, and The Match Factory Girl is a man of very few words, even by Finnish standards.

And the same is true of his cinema: silent people are in the majority, action is much better than words. The autodidact removes all the details from his films that might obstruct the essence, and uses humour and sentiment to defend all those who have been marginalized.

But there is no happy ending here, the Finnish boozer is too much of a pessimist for that. His oeuvre is, however, an appeal to retain your dignity even in miserable circumstances. Kippis!
