Rotor DC, a second-hand construction materials store

There is no glamorous showroom at Rotor DC, but instead they have a big display area in a hangar on the industrial site in Anderlecht. Their motto? “What you see is what you get.”

Rotor was founded in 2005 as a research and design centre that focuses on reclaiming construction materials. From accessories and furniture to raw building materials, the items depend on which building they happen to be demolishing at the time. When offices, schools, or administrative buildings are being pulled down, Rotor comes and rescues the gems from them first.

They have a particular preference for high-quality 20th-century materials and objects. Whenever customers buy something, they are also given the history and provenance of the item. For example, your new tile floor might once have been part of the former Solvay building in Elsene/Ixelles, or your wooden doors once stood in a monastery.

There are hat stands from an executive office, or porcelain urinals or table tops that once accommodated European civil servants. Or how would you like to walk through the former doors of the Generale Bank/Société générale de banque every day? You can find something for every interior and every budget.

The clientele mostly consists of handy DIYers, but many architects come here too. You should definitely check out their website, which lists all the items under tags and gives you an idea of the price. This is an absolute must for sustainable renovators who love an original touch in their interior, and your chance to own a little piece of our cultural heritage.
