Hopefully, Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) or Allison Janney (The West Wing) will win Oscars for their performances in I, Tonya. Their performances are not as good as those of the other nominated actresses, but that way at least someone will derive some pleasure from Tonya Harding’s sordid story.

In 1994, this Olympic figure skater was involved in assaulting her rival Nancy Kerrigan, and she was punished severely. She was not only convicted, but the skating association also banned her for life. The film does not reveal exactly how everything went down. The director and screenwriter have hidden behind the statement that they based the film on “irony-free, wildly contradictory, totally true interviews with Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly.”

Gillooly is Harding’s ex. He planned the attack with the help of a weirdo who claimed to have worked for the international secret services. Gillooly abused Harding. She was apparently also abused by her mother. The figure skating scene looked down on her impoverished background. The fact that Tonya Harding is still standing is half a miracle. The film shows her side of the bizarre story, but occasionally too lazily goes for easy laughs.
