Bar des Amis

I must say that it really hurt when the local bar ’t Kapiteintje suddenly closed. The fact that our cat is called Marcel is because we saw that name written on a paper placemat when we were once eating at ’t Kapiteintje. I remember former mayor Michel Demaret holding a political meeting there once, and I watched dozens of football matches there, including – by way of a worthy farewell it later turned out – the decisive Croatia-Belgium. Where ’t Kapiteintje once was, you will now find Bar des Amis, and the makeover is impressive. The place is unrecognisable. If you’re quick, you’ll still be able to go to the back of the café and see the black hole where the door to the kitchen used to be. Over the course of history, hundreds of thousands of calories were brought to the tables through that door, in the form of sausage & mash, américain with chips, or dame blanche with whipped cream. But still, let’s give the new crowd a chance too. Bar des Amis is a chain of cafés (sometimes called a “concept”, but that concept seems rather vague to us) that are also located in Ghent, Bruges, and Kortrijk. There is also a link with the Polé Polé festivals in Ghent en Ostend. A long bar and lots of cosy tables are intended to facilitate chatting among les amis, though the music is actually a bit too loud for that. The décor took a lot of work: a thousand and one vintage things have been brought in to give the space a charming bric-à-brac feel. Among other things, we spotted a canoe, old skis, fishing tackle, a motorbike, deer antlers, and a gas tank. It is a cosy place, and the service is OK. There are a lot of good beers on the menu, as well as cocktails and the like, but no sausage & mash or dame blanche as of yet.

NL ❙ Ik moet zeggen dat het pijn deed, het plotse verdwijnen van volkscafé ’t Kapiteintje. Dat onze kat Marcel heet, komt omdat die naam ooit op een papieren placemat stond toen we in ’t Kapiteintje zaten te eten. Ik heb er ooit nog voormalig burgemeester Michel Demaret een politieke bijeenkomst weten houden, en ik heb er menige voetbalwedstrijd bekeken, waaronder – bij wijze van waardig afscheid, zo bleek dus nadien – die beslissende WK-match tussen Kroatië en België. Waar ’t Kapiteintje was, is nu Bar des Amis, en de make-over is indrukwekkend. De ruimte is onherkenbaar. Wie snel is, kan achteraan nog net het zwarte gat zien waar vroeger de deur naar de keuken zat. Door die deur zijn in de loop van de geschiedenis honderdduizenden calorieën naar de gelagzaal gebracht, in de vorm van stoemp saucisse, americain met frieten of dame blanche met slagroom. Maar kom, laat ons de nieuwelingen ook een kans geven. Bar des Amis is een keten van cafés (sommigen spreken over een ‘concept’, maar dat concept lijkt ons nogal vaag) die ook al te vinden zijn in Gent, Brugge en Kortrijk. Er is ook een link met de Polé Polé-festivals in Gent en Oostende. Een lange toog en heel veel knusse tafeltjes moeten het les amis mogelijk maken een babbeltje te slaan terwijl de muziek eigenlijk wat te hard staat. Aan het decor is gewerkt: duizend-en-een vintage spullen werden aangedragen om de ruimte de charme te geven van een brocante. We spotten onder meer een kano, oude ski’s, visgerei, een motorfiets, hertengeweien en een benzinetank. Het is een gezellige plek, de bediening is oké. Op de kaart staan vele goede bieren, cocktails en dies meer, maar voorlopig geen stoemp saucisse of dame blanche.

FR ❙ Je dois dire que la disparition soudaine du café populaire ’t Kapiteintje m’a fait mal, très mal. Si notre chat s’appelle Marcel, c’est parce que ce nom se trouvait sur un set de table en papier de ’t Kapiteintje. J’y ai un jour eu une réunion politique avec l’ancien bourgmestre Michel Demaret et j’y ai vu d’innombrables matchs de foot, dont - une sorte d’adieu, rétrospectivement - ce décisif Croatie-Belgique. À sa place se trouve aujourd’hui le Bar des Amis et le changement de look est impressionnant. L’endroit est méconnaissable. Les plus rapides pourront encore voir à l’arrière un trou noir là où se trouvait avant la porte des cuisines. Au cours des années sont passées par cette porte des centaines de milliers de calories, emportées vers la salle sous forme de stoemp saucisse, d’américain avec frites ou de dame blanche à la crème fraîche. Mais bon, laissons quand même une chance au nouveau venu. Le Bar des Amis est une chaîne de cafés (certains parlent de « concept » mais ce concept nous semble assez vague) que l’on trouve déjà à Gand, Bruges et Courtrai et qui est également liée aux festivals Polé-Polé de Gand et d’Ostende. Un long comptoir et des tables confortables et nombreuses doivent permettre aux amis de discuter même si la musique va un peu fort. On a bossé sur la déco : mille et un objets vintage ont été rassemblés pour donner au lieu le charme d’une brocante. On y a notamment repéré un canoë, de vieux skis, des accessoires de pêche, une motocyclette, des bois de cerf et un réservoir d’essence. L’endroit est agréable et on n’a rien à reprocher au service. On trouve sur la carte de nombreuses bières, des cocktails et ainsi de suite, mais pour l’instant ni stoemp saucisse ni dame blanche.
