Last week we received the surprising news that Café Métropole on place De Brouckèreplein will close temporarily on 1 May. We thought this strange because when we visited recently, it was so busy that we had to wait for a seat. The (heated) terrasse is also often completely packed, and was apparently not suffering from the inclement weather conditions . Nevertheless, after 36 years, the management of Hotel Métropole chose not to extend the lease with the people who currently run the bar, and the café is thus closing until somebody new can be found to run it. If you’d rather be safe than sorry, you’d better drop in over the next few weeks. Café Métropole is a monument, and pretty much the only witness to the grandeur exuded by place De Brouckèreplein in bygone decades. Dozens of celebrities have drifted in over the years. In fact, the café has been here four years longer than the hotel (established in 1894), though it was then housed in the older wing with the column façade. The café was established by the Wielemans family (who still own it), whose ancestors had founded the Wielemans-Ceuppens brewery in 1862. The brewery was headquartered in Vorst/Forest, and eventually became one of the biggest and richest breweries in the country by investing in the fashion of low fermentation beers (like pilsner) at the end of the nineteenth century. The café’s success enabled the purchase of the ASLK/CGER bank next door. The bank was rebuilt into a hotel, and here is a further fun fact. The architect who designed the pompous interior of the present café – Alban Chambon – is the same man who appeared in this column last week as the architect of the new ASLK/CGER at Wolvengracht/rue du Fossé aux Loups – which has now temporarily become the Cointreau Fizz Garden.
