JAT'

Naamsestraat/rue de Namur is the shortest way from the city centre to Elsene/Ixelles, but strangely enough, it’s actually a rather quiet hill. So it’s a good place to stroll and maybe drop in now and then to the premises where Toni&Guy used to be located (as if hairdressers were the key milestones you use to orient yourself in the city…). A few weeks ago, a new coffee bar opened there, where you can also have breakfast and lunch. JAT’ is, for the moment, the only establishment of that name, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it developed into a little chain, given that the boss is the man behind the Ciabatta Mania bread shops on the Louizalaan/avenue Louise and the Kunstberg/Mont des Arts. It’s a likeable name, too, JAT’ – it means a bowl in French and has also passed into Belgian dialects of Dutch, as in “een jat koffie” for a cup of coffee. So what do you get in your cup? Classic espressos and lungos, of course, but also ice-cold or sweetened coffee or even coffee with added drinking chocolate. There is also an extensive selection of teas and milkshakes, but by now you already know what sort of range to expect in an establishment of this kind. You can keep things healthy by opting for soup, fruit or vegetable juices, salads, or rolls. Or yield to the temptations of comfort food such as muffins, cupcakes, and homemade crisps. One selling point is that JAT’ also sells freshly made bagels. Another thing that sets JAT’ above the average coffee bar is its design and layout. The place is bright and roomy and you have a variety of sitting options: separate tables, a long shared table, a long bench, or little seats with small side tables in all sorts of colours. Light is provided by wee lamps in a varied selection of lampshades, with plants providing a little more shade here and there. In front of the door there is a terrasse with a large awning, while inside you can wallow in unrestricted wi-fi and a range of international magazines.

NL ❙ De Naamsestraat is de kortste weg van de binnenstad naar Elsene, maar vreemd genoeg is het daar op die helling vrij kalm. Een goede plek om te flaneren dus en vanaf nu misschien ook om af en toe eens binnen te springen in het pand waar vroeger Toni&Guy was gevestigd (alsof kapperszaken voor u de belangrijkste bakens zijn om u in de stad te oriënteren...). Sinds enkele weken is daar een nieuwe koffiebar geopend waar je ook kunt ontbijten en lunchen. JAT’ is voorlopig de eerste vestiging met die naam, maar het zou ons niet verwonderen als het een kleine keten zou worden. De patron is immers de man achter de broodjeszaken van Ciabatta Mania die op de Louizalaan en de Kunstberg te vinden zijn. JAT’ is ook een sympathieke naam – want zonder twijfel een van de meest geliefde leenwoorden uit het Frans. Wat schaft de jat in JAT’? Klassieke espresso’s en lungos, maar ook ijskoude, gezoete of van cacao voorziene koffies. Ook qua thee en milkshake is er een ruime keuze, maar u kent inmiddels wel het aanbod dat dit soort zaken te bieden heeft. Je kunt het gezond houden door voor soep, fruit- en groentesapjes, salades of broodjes te kiezen. Of buigen voor troostvoedsel genre muffins, cupcakes of huisgebakken chips. JAT’ onderscheidt zich wel omdat het ook vers geprepareerde bagels verkoopt. Wat de zaak nog voor heeft op soortgelijke koffiebars, is toch wel de inrichting. Het is hier erg ruim en licht. Om te zitten heb je verschillende opties: aan aparte tafels, aan de lange, gemeenschappelijke tafel, op de lange zitbank of op de zeteltjes met bijzettafeltjes in alle kleuren. Lampjes met een gevarieerde selectie aan abat-jours zorgen voor licht, en hier en daar zorgt een plant voor wat schaduw. Voor de deur is er een terras met een grote luifel. Binnen baad je ongelimiteerd in de wifi en het aanbod aan internationale tijdschriften.

FR ❙ La rue de Namur a beau être le chemin le plus court pour se rendre à Ixelles depuis le bas de la ville, étrangement, cette rue en pente reste assez calme. C’est donc un agréable lieu de flânerie. Un nouveau café, où l’on peut aussi se restaurer, s’y est récemment installé. JAT’ est pour le moment le premier établissement de ce nom, mais cela ne nous surprendrait pas qu’il devienne l’enseigne d’une petite chaîne. Son patron est le même que celui de Ciabatta Mania, la sandwicherie que l’on trouve sur l’avenue Louise et au Mont des Arts. JAT’ est un nom sympathique, et sans doute l’un des emprunts les plus appréciés en néerlandais au départ du français. Mais que nous offre la jatte chez JAT’? Des espressi et caffè lunghi classiques, mais aussi des cafés glacés, agrémentés de sucreries ou de cacao. Suivant l’offre de ce genre d’établissements, le choix de thés et milkshakes est lui aussi vaste. On peut veiller à sa santé en optant pour des soupes, des jus de fruits et de légumes, des salades ou des sandwiches. Ou alors se rabattre sur de la nourriture plus réconfortante tels que des muffins, des cupcakes ou des chips faites maison. JAT’ se distingue par le fait qu’il vend aussi des bagels frais et préparés sur place. Un autre point fort de JAT’ réside dans sa déco et son aménagement, tout en espace et fort lumineux. On peut ainsi s’attabler soit à des tables séparées, soit à une longue table commune, bordée de longs bancs, ou encore s’installer dans de petits fauteuils pourvus de tables d’appoints multicolores. Des lampes avec des abat-jours variés procurent une lumière modulée tandis que des plantes ménagent çà et là un peu d’ombre. En façade, il y a une grande terrasse sous marquise tandis qu’à l’intérieur, on peut surfer de façon illimitée en wi-fi et se plonger dans l’offre de magazines et publications internationaux.
