John & Rose

It has rarely happened to me that walking into a bar has had such an impact on my mood. But John & Rose isn’t just another café. It’s an artistic café that integrates a bar and exhibition space, and which is actually a kind of living room with plenty of homely warmth. The space is remarkably deep and wide because it is housed in a building that covers three plots of the ever-changing Vlaamsesteenweg/rue de Flandre. The façade consists entirely of inviting windows, which shed light on the wooden tables and floors in the front part of the space. Breakfast, light lunches, and drinks are served at the tables, but you can also use them to work quietly, read, or hold meetings. There are also two wooden coffee tables with eclectic vintage chairs and sofas, and you will find a baby chair if needed. Art and interior design magazines can be found lying around on the little rugs that are draped nonchalantly across the floor. Along with light and space, the acoustics also contribute to the calming ambiance of John & Rose. And of course there is also the art on the walls, because John & Rose is also a gallery that invites passers-by and art lovers to come and take a look. There is a rotational system in which two different artists’ work is shown each month. Currently, they are our very own photographer Gautier Houba and graphic artist Mortimer Lojka. There is enough space at the back for a grand piano. The café may only be open during the day, you can also rent the space for catered parties for between fifteen and one hundred people. At the back you will also find the bar where you can order your coffee, soup, beer, cocktails, and other cold and hot drinks. Breakfast and brunch, finger food, salads with organic bread, and filled sandwiches are all made with fresh and organic produce.

FR ❙ Il nous est rarement arrivé d’entrer dans un bar qui ait un tel impact sur notre humeur. Mais John & Rose n’est pas un simple café. C’est un art café qui intègre un bar et un espace d’exposition et qui est aussi une sorte de living à l’atmosphère très cosy et chaleureuse. L’espace est très profond et large car niché dans un bâtiment qui couvre trois parcelles de la rue de Flandre, en perpétuelle transformation. La façade se compose intégralement de fenêtres accueillantes, qui laissent entrer la lumière sur les tables et le sol en bois de la partie à l’avant. On peut prendre place à ces tables pour un petit-déjeuner, un repas léger, une boisson ou pour travailler, lire ou se réunir dans le calme. Un peu plus loin, on trouve deux tables basses en bois avec des sièges éclectiques et vintage. Il y a aussi des chaises hautes pour bébés si besoin. Des magazines de déco et d’art traînent ici et là sur de petits tapis disposés en oblique qui drapent d’une manière nonchalante le sol. Outre la lumière et l’espace, l’acoustique contribue elle aussi à l’ambiance apaisante de John & Rose. Et il y a de l’art sur les murs, car John & Rose entend aussi être une galerie qui invite les passants et les amateurs d’art à venir jeter un œil. À peu près tous les mois, deux nouveaux artistes sont exposés. Pour le moment, c’est le photographe bruxellois Gautier Houba, un de nos collaborateurs, et le graphiste Mortimer Lojka. L’arrière héberge aussi un piano à queue. Comme le café est ouvert uniquement en journée, il est possible de louer l’endroit pour des fêtes avec catering de 15 à 100 personnes. Tout au fond, il y a aussi le comptoir, où l’on peut commander un café, de la soupe, des bières, des cocktails et d’autres boissons chaudes et froides. Le petit-déjeuner, le brunch, la finger food, les salades et les tartines garnies sont préparés avec des produits frais et bios.

NL ❙ Zelden meegemaakt dat het binnentreden in een bar zo’n impact had op de gemoedsgesteldheid. John & Rose is dan ook niet zomaar een café. Het is een kunstcafé dat bar en tentoonstellingsruimte integreert, en eigenlijk ook een soort woonkamer is met veel huiselijke warmte. De ruimte is erg diep en breed, want huist in een gebouw dat drie percelen beslaat van de immer transformerende Vlaamsesteenweg. De gevel bestaat integraal uit uitnodigende ramen, die licht laten vallen op de houten tafels en vloeren in het voorste gedeelte. Aan die tafels kan worden ontbeten, licht geluncht, gedronken of in stilte gewerkt, vergaderd of gelezen. Wat verderop staan dan twee houten salontafels met enkele eclectische, vintage stoeltjes en zeteltjes. Wie een kinderstoeltje nodig heeft, vindt dat ook. Kunst- en interieurtijdschriften slingeren vrij in het rond op kleine tapijtjes die op een nonchalante manier schuin over de vloer gedrapeerd zijn. Samen met licht en ruimte draagt ook de akoestiek bij tot de kalmerende ambiance bij John & Rose. En er is natuurlijk de kunst aan de muren, want John & Rose wil een galerie zijn die voorbijgangers en kunstliefhebbers ook uitnodigt om te komen kijken. Zowat elke maand wordt er geroteerd met werk van een tweetal kunstenaars. Momenteel zijn dat onze eigenste fotograaf Gautier Houba en graficus Mortimer Lojka. Achteraan is er ook nog plaats voor een vleugelpiano. Want het café is dan wel alleen overdag open, je kunt ook ruimtes huren voor gecaterde feestjes van vijftien tot honderd personen. Achteraan is er de toog waar je je koffie, soep, bier, cocktails en andere koude en warme dranken kunt bestellen. Ontbijt en brunch, finger food, salades met biobrood en belegde boterhammen zijn met verse en bioproducten bereid.
