OR Espresso Bar

The OR Espresso Bar opposite the Beursschouwburg has been a fixture for coffee lovers for about two years already. A second establishment recently opened on place Jourdanplein, in the heart of the European Quarter. The history of OR started in 2001, when Katrien and Tom opened a coffee shop in Aalst with their own roasting house. They did everything themselves and still had a lot to learn about coffee, but nevertheless, the shop was soon immensely successful. Due to the fact that they had no test audience to try out their coffees, they opened a coffee bar in Ghent five years later. Colleagues and friends called them mad, but Katrien and Tom felt that the time was ripe for a new way to drink coffee. The way they do in New York, for example, in a nice setting with good music and magazines. A few years ago, they moved from Ghent to the centre of Brussels. By now, they were buying their beans directly from farmers in Brazil or Rwanda, and they go there every season to try out the coffees, so that they can serve their wholesale clients and coffee bar customers the very best flavour. You can’t just walk in and order “a coffee”. But don’t worry, the baristas are happy to help you choose. If you prefer a mild coffee, pick a filtered cup. Strong coffee? Order an espresso. Incidentally, the latter is far more popular in Brussels than in Ghent. Katrien and Tom chose the European Quarter for their second bar in Brussels deliberately. Eurocrats are well acquainted with the coffee bar concept from their home countries, and are adept at ordering from an extensive coffee menu. Just like at the other OR bars, this one offers breakfast, bagels for lunch, and cake and brownies for in between. Soon you’ll be able to get it all outside in the sun: the terrasse application has been submitted!

FR ❙ L’OR Espresso Bar, situé dans le centre juste en face du Beursschouwburg, constitue depuis deux ans une valeur sûre pour les amateurs de café. Un deuxième établissement vient d’ouvrir à la place Jourdan, au cœur du quartier européen. L’histoire d’OR a commencé en 2001, lorsque Katrien et Tom ont ouvert un magasin de café à Alost avec leur propre atelier de torréfaction. Ils faisaient tout eux-mêmes, avaient encore beaucoup à apprendre sur le café, mais la boutique a vite tourné à plein régime. Parce qu’ils n’avaient pas de public test pour goûter leurs cafés, ils ont ouvert cinq ans plus tard un bar à café à Gand. Leurs collègues et amis les traitaient de fou, mais Katrien et Tom sentaient que le temps était venu pour une nouvelle manière de boire du café. Comme à New York par exemple, dans un décor sympa, avec de la bonne musique et des journaux. Ils ont quitté Gand quelques années plus tard pour s’installer au centre de Bruxelles. À présent ils achètent les grains de café directement aux agriculteurs au Brésil ou au Rwanda, ce qui veut dire qu’à chaque saison, ils vont tester sur place pour servir les meilleurs goûts à leurs clients (OR fournit aussi un grand nombre d’établissements Horeca). On n’y entre pas juste pour commander « un café », mais pas de souci : les baristas vous aideront volontiers à choisir. Celui qui préfère un café doux prendra idéalement un filtre. Un café fort ? Alors on commande un expresso. Katrien et Tom ont consciemment opté pour le quartier européen pour installer leur deuxième bar bruxellois : les eurocrates connaissent le concept de bar à café de leur pays d’origine et aiment faire leur choix dans une vaste carte de cafés. Comme dans les autres bars OR, ici aussi on peut prendre un petit-déjeuner, un lunch avec des bagels ou encore un cake ou un brownie. Et bientôt aussi dehors au soleil : la demande d’autorisation pour la terrasse a été envoyée !

NL ❙ De OR Espresso Bar tegenover de Beursschouwburg in het centrum is ondertussen al een goede twee jaar een vaste waarde voor koffieliefhebbers. Zopas ging er een tweede vestiging open, aan het Jourdanplein, midden in de Europese wijk. Het OR-verhaal begon in 2001, toen Katrien en Tom een koffiewinkel openden in Aalst met een eigen branderij. Ze deden alles zelf, moesten nog veel leren over koffie, maar toch draaide de winkel al snel op volle toeren. Omdat ze geen testpubliek hadden om hun koffies te proeven, openden ze vijf jaar later een koffiebar in Gent. Collega’s en vrienden verklaarden hen gek, maar Katrien en Tom voelden dat de tijd rijp was voor een nieuwe manier van koffiedrinken. Zoals in New York bijvoorbeeld, in een leuk decor met goeie muziek en tijdschriften, niet zoals in een Vlaamse tearoom met een pannenkoek. Van Gent trokken ze een aantal jaren later naar het centrum van Brussel. De bonen kochten ze ondertussen rechtstreeks aan bij de boer in Brazilië of Rwanda, wat wil zeggen dat ze elk seizoen ter plaatse gaan proeven om de beste smaak voor te kunnen schotelen aan hun klanten (want OR levert aan tal van horecazaken) en koffiebarbezoekers. Er binnenstappen en “een koffie” bestellen gaat niet. Maar geen nood, de barista’s helpen je graag bij het kiezen. Wie liever een zachte koffie drinkt, kiest best een filter. Straffe koffie? Dan bestel je een espresso. Die laatste wordt in Brussel trouwens veel meer gedronken dan in Gent. Katrien en Tom kozen bewust voor de Europese wijk voor hun tweede bar in Brussel. Eurocraten kennen het koffiebarconcept van in hun thuisland en kiezen met gemak uit een ruime koffiekaart. Net zoals in de andere OR-bars kun je aan het Jourdanplein ook ontbijten, lunchen met bagels en snacken met cake en brownies. Binnenkort ook buiten in de zon: de aanvraag voor een terras is ingediend!
