Pin Pon

Because we’re Dutch-speaking and we’re on the place du Jeu de Balle, we thought that Pin Pon referred to the ball game that is sometimes also called table tennis. But to French-speakers, pin pon might more spontaneously sound like the siren of the fire brigade, which was housed in the recently redesignated fire station here until thirty years ago. Pin Pon is located inside the little building that forms the entrance gate to the courtyard, where there are a few more new businesses. It’s location is superb. Above the ground floor, where the bar is located, there are two more floors. There is a quiet wine bar on the mezzanine, and the second floor has a restaurant under glass. The whole building boasts good views of the Vossenplein/place du Jeu de Balle, with its famous second-hand market all morning. There is a little bridge via which you can ping-pong to the other side of the gate. The café’s bar is decorated with woven fire hoses. From Wednesday to Sunday (there will probably be more opening days in the future), a team of eight waiters serves the droves of people this place is already attracting. Charli and Thomas are the partners who took the initiative. Charli is the baker at Charli Boulangerie on Sint-Katelijnestraat/rue Sainte-Catherine, and he also provides the fresh bread and pastries here. They serve breakfast daily, and brunch at weekends. There are small but tasty dishes and sandwiches available at the bar. We sat at the bar and ordered a culinary interpretation of the mitraillette – the Brussels sandwich with fries inside, which in this case also contained roast beef, celery, and a mustard sauce. The menu is creative and changes regularly. The prices are reasonable. Beside the wines, the drinks menu also features good coffee, strong drinks, and beers. Incidentally, Pin Pon is also the name of the hoppy lager that Brasserie de la Senne brews exclusively for this café.

NL ❙ Omdat we Nederlandstalig zijn en ons op de place du Jeu de Balle bevinden, dachten wij dat Pin Pon verwees naar het balspel dat ook wel eens tafeltennis wordt genoemd. Maar wie Franstalig is, hoort in pin pon al iets sneller het geluid van de sirene van de brandweer, die tot dertig jaar geleden gevestigd was in de kazerne die zich hier bevindt. Pin Pon huist in het gebouwtje dat de toegangspoort vormt naar de binnenplaats waar nog enkele nieuwe handelszaken gevestigd zijn. De locatie is ronduit geweldig. Boven de benedenverdieping, waar de bar te vinden is, zijn nog twee niveaus. Op de mezzanine ligt een kalme wijnbar, en op de tweede verdieping bevindt zich het restaurant onder glas. Overal heb je zicht op het Vossenplein, waar zoals geweten de hele voormiddag brocante wordt gehouden. Via een passerelle kun je van de ene kant van het gebouw over de poort naar de andere kant pingpongen. De toog van de bar is aangekleed met gevlochten brandweerslangen. Een equipe van acht man bedient van woensdag tot zondag (wellicht zijn er op termijn nog meer openingsdagen) het volk dat nu al talrijk komt toestromen. Charli en Thomas zijn de vennoten die het initiatief namen. Charli is tevens de bakker van Charli Boulangerie in de Sint-Katelijnestraat, die hier ook voor het verse brood en het gebak zorgt. Je kunt hier ontbijten en in het weekend ook brunchen. In de bar zijn er kleine maar lekkere gerechten en sandwiches te krijgen. Wij hebben in de bar een culinaire interpretatie van de mitraillette gegeten – het Brusselse broodje waar frieten in zitten en in dit geval ook rosbief, selderij en mosterdsaus. Het menu is creatief en verandert regelmatig. De prijzen zijn abordable. Op de drankkaart staan behalve de wijnen ook goede koffie, sterke dranken en bieren. Pin Pon is trouwens de naam geworden van de hoppige pils die Brasserie de la Senne exclusief brouwt voor deze plek.

FR ❙ Contrairement au néerlandophone, le francophone reconnaît ici tout de suite le bruit de la sirène des pompiers qui, il y a 30 ans de cela, peuplaient la caserne installée à cet endroit et récemment réaffectée. Pin Pon occupe le petit bâtiment qui forme la porte d’entrée vers la cour intérieure où quelques commerces se sont également établis. L’endroit est magnifique. Au-dessus de rez où se trouve le bar, il y a encore deux niveaux. Un bar à vin très tranquille est installé dans la mezzanine et au deuxième étage, le restaurant prend place sous une verrière. On a vue de partout sur la place du Jeu de Balle où, comme on le sait, une brocante a lieu tous les matins. Une passerelle permet de passer d’un côté à l’autre du bâtiment et le comptoir du bar est habillé de tuyaux d’incendie entrelacés. Du mercredi au dimanche (les jours d’ouverture seront peut-être prochainement élargis), une équipe de huit personnes sert les clients qui affluent déjà en nombre. Charli et Thomas sont les associés à l’initiative du projet. Charli est par ailleurs le patron de la boulangerie qui porte son nom à la rue Sainte-Catherine et qui fournit ici le pain frais et les pâtisseries. On peut venir pour le petit déjeuner et, le week-end, pour le brunch. Au bar, on peut commander des plats, simples mais délicieux, et des sandwiches. Nous avons dégusté une interprétation culinaire de la mitraillette, ce sandwich bruxellois rempli de frites et en l’occurrence également de rosbif, de céleri et de sauce à la moutarde. Le menu est original et change régulièrement. Les prix sont abordables. Sur la carte des boissons, on trouve du vin, du bon café, des alcools et des bières, dont la Pin Pon, une pils au houblon brassée spécialement pour l’établissement par la Brasserie de la Senne.
