Oh Sees ouvre le bal d’un calendrier de concerts explosif à vous faire languir, danser, rire et verser une larme au son d’accordéons éthiopiens, de math rock apocalyptique, de poésie hip-hop, de tubas jazzy, de merveilles classiques et de beats venimeux.

1/9: Oh Sees -- psych rock --

OUT OF THE GARAGE. Well before the hype, John Dwyer and Co. shook up the ranks of garage rock with (Thee) Oh Sees. Dirty, edgy, powerful, and psychedelic, the US band’s music paved the way for Ty Segall, Black Lips, and others.
ON THE HIGHWAY. Also on the new album Face Stabber, driving force of Californian rock John Dwyer is using his guitar to create hypnotic, repetitive, and thumping rhythms. At the crossroads of progressive rock and psychedelia, hard rock, and an obsession with motorik beats, Oh Sees is miles ahead of the crowd.

2/9: Lonnie Holley -- wild card --

PAS COMME LES AUTRES. Tout comme sa personnalité et ses sculptures – souvent assemblées à l’aide d’objets trouvés et exposées au Metropolitan et au Smithsonian, la musique de ce narrateur d’histoires non linéaires et artiste outsider de Birmingham, Alabama, est particulièrement excentrique.
FLORAISON TARDIVE. Des rêveries pleines de soul dans un langage poétique, accompagnées d’un jeu improvisé au piano, forment le prolongement du monde sentimental intense dans lequel il s’est retiré après une jeunesse cruelle et chaotique avec, entre autres, un passage par une reformatory school pour les enfants de couleur. C’est seulement à soixante ans que son talent musical s’est épanoui.

16/9: Jef Neve -- jazz/klassiek --

WERELDPREMIERE. Bozar vroeg aan de Kempense pianist en bruggenbouwer tussen Mozart, Monk en Natalia om een nieuwe compositie te schrijven voor hun monumentale orgel.
ORGAN NIGHT FEVER. In het kader van Bozars orgelfestival begeleidt Jef Neve in de Henry Le Boeuf-zaal samen met zijn ensemble, dat dit keer bestaat uit vijf snaar- en evenveel blaasinstrumenten, organist Peter Maus op piano.

19/9: River into Lake -- indie pop --

EN V.O. À Bruxelles, Boris Gronemberger a longtemps joué de la batterie pour les autres (Girls in Hawaiï, Françoiz Breut). En solo, il soignait ses envies personnelles à l’ombre de V.O. : deux lettres pour un projet voué aux mélodies aériennes et sophistiquées.
SANS SOUS-TITRES. Après une courte pause carrière et de longues réflexions, le musicien refait maintenant surface sous un autre nom : River Into Lake plonge l’auditeur au cœur d’une musique délicieusement ouatée. Entre pop et jazz, cuivres, cordes et synthés analogiques, ce nouveau monde se révèle extrêmement précieux.

22/9: Romina Lischka & Maude Gratton -- klassiek --

LANGOUSTINEVIOOL? Romina Lischka is een van de beste viola da gambaspelers ter wereld. Het smakelijke schaaldier heeft daar niks mee te maken, het is eerder het muzikale neefje van de cello. Bij Bozar wordt Lischka begeleid door haar vaste maatje Maude Gratton. Dat is op dat andere iconische barokinstrument, de klavecimbel.
KLASSIEKE RECEPT? Niet echt. Lischka maakte naam en faam met haar vertolking van de muziek uit de renaissance en de barok. Dat ze hier nu kiest voor vroegklassieke werken van Karl Friedrich Abel is uitzonderlijk, en alleen maar een extra reden om dit concert niet te laten schieten.

25/9: Joe Armon-Jones -- jazz --

TALENTED MULTITASKER. The young British keyboard player just performed at Pukkelpop with Ezra Collective, but his own trio has also made a mark in the leading London jazz scene, which he spices up with dashes of soul and dub.
PRODUCTIVE. Assisted by a number of his musician friends, last year’s debut Starting Today revealed an innovative and spiritual sound. On Turn to Clear View, his new solo album that will be released at the end of September, he continues with the same élan.

26/9: Mattiel -- indie rock --

À LA FERME. Née dans l’État de Géorgie, Mattiel a grandi dans une ferme. Entre les bottes de foin et le poulailler, la chanteuse a pondu quelques hymnes rétro et sexy à souhait. Gravés sur un premier album quasi parfait, ces petits assemblages de rock et de soul attirent l’attention des plus grands.
À L’USINE. Repérée et adulée par Jack White, la chanteuse revient ainsi dans l’actualité avec Satis Factory, un deuxième disque qui puise ses charmes chez Nancy Sinatra, mais aussi dans le cinéma de Quentin Tarantino.

27/9: Nihiloxica -- world music/electro --

TRADITION. This incredible combo from Kampala in Uganda is taking East African musical traditions into the future. A true stage show experience, the group’s performance is mainly based on percussion.
MODERNITY. Nihiloxica combine djembes, congas, and various other kinds of drums with the meticulous beats of a DJ to invent new rituals on the dancefloor. Tribal and thrilling, this Ugandan group’s Afro-techno sounds are creating new ways of dancing.

27/9: Hailu Mergia -- world music --

MR. CAB DRIVER. De Ethiopische toetsenist en accordeonist Hailu Mergia mocht in de jaren 1970 als aanvoerder van de Walias Band dan hoge toppen gescheerd hebben in zijn thuisland, na zijn verhuis naar de VS kwam hij alleen nog aan de bak als taxichauffeur.
RETOUR. Het bloed kroop waar het niet gaan kon. Eerst via een minikeyboardje in het handschoenenkastje van zijn taxi. Na de herontdekking door het hippe Awe- some Tapes from Africa-label als comebackheld.

10 YEARS. That is the age of the avant-drone company which, energized by the shamanistic organ and wind instruments of the Brussels-based musicians Brecht Ameel and Kim Delcour, has been expanding its tonal range over the past few years with kindred spirits on 5-snared double bass, sarangi, hurdy-gurdy, and ondes-Martenot.
AYÎK ADHÎSTA ADHÎSTA AYÎK. Named after a passage from Carl Gustav Jung’s Memories, Dreams, Reflections, on their new album the company explores the moments before (re)birth and celebrates its anniversary as it sounds, like a contemporary ritual, instinctive but full of dark purpose.

29/9: Little Simz -- hip-hop --

LONDON CALLING ! Adoubée par Kendrick Lamar, remarquée chez Gorillaz, Little Simz n’oublie jamais d’où elle vient. Fan du club de foot d’Arsenal, la rappeuse déploie son accent cockney sur des sons piochés aux quatre coins de Londres. Grime, R&B, UK bass ou hip-hop s’agitent ainsi au cœur de sa musique.
COMBAT RAP. Loin des bandes préenregistrées et autres plans truqués en vogue chez ses collègues américain(e)s, l’Anglaise donne de la voix. Rentre-dedans et haut perché, son flow radical et bagarreur défend l’honneur du rap britannique.

4/10: Eötvös & Bartók -- klassiek --

EEN VÖS VERLIEST WEL Z'N HAREN... 75 is Péter Eötvös, en in die driekwarteeuw heeft hij zich bij de krans Hongaarse muzikale meesters als Franz Liszt en Béla Bartók geschaard. Door zijn werk als componist, maar evenzeer als voortrekker van hedendaagse muziek bij het toonaangevende Ensemble Intercontemporain.
MAAR NIET ZIJN STREKEN. Het zijn alleen de allergrootsten die componeren, en daarna nog voor een orkest kruipen om hun eigen werk te dirigeren. Stravinsky deed het, Mahler ook en nu dus Eötvös. Stéphane Denève zal zijn Brussels Philharmonic met veel plezier even uit handen geven.

5/10: Daymé Arocena -- world music --

WHAT'S THAT SON? Cuba is more than the wrinkled gentlemen in Buena Vista Social Club or the tanned melancholy of Omara Portuondo. In post-Castro Cuba, Daymé Arocena has given traditional rumba and son a contemporary twist.
SONOCARDIOGRAM. The eccentric singer from Havana has a deep, powerful alto that is reminiscent of Nina Simone. She has toyed with soul and R&B over the past few years, but on her new album Sonocardiogram she has gone back to her roots.

6/10: Bill Callahan -- indie rock --

BROUILLARD. Bill Callahan s’est révélé via les chansons de Smog, faux groupe et véritable réceptacle émotionnel de son unique leader. Dandy à la voix de crooner, l’artiste suspend sa poésie désenchantée sur les cordes d’une guitare acoustique. De quoi séduire les fans de rock indépendant, draguer Cat Power et charmer Joanna Newsom.
ÉCLAIRCIE. Passé maître dans l’art de conter ses belles histoires, Bill Callahan avance désormais à visage découvert. Marié, jeune papa, le chanteur partage sa joie de vivre sur le nouveau Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest, un disque touchant et terriblement élégant.

13/10: Ambrose Akinmusire -- jazz --

K-DOT OR NOT? Hij heeft minder messiasallures dan Kamasi Washington en is lang niet zo excentriek als Christian Scott, maar in de luwte bewandelt de Amerikaanse trompettist Ambrose Akinmusire wel al twee decennia een intrigerend jazzparcours. Dat deed hem onder meer ook belanden op Kendrick Lamars magnum opus To pimp a butterfly.
THE NEXT STEP? De invloed van K-Dot is te horen op ‘Miracle and streetfight’, van Akinmusires recentste plaat, het ambitieuze, tussen hiphop en klassiek laverende Origami harvest. Benieuwd wat zijn volgende stap is, in Brussel blaast hij alvast verzamelen met het Brussels Jazz Orchestra.

16/10: Habib Koité & Bamada -- musique du monde --

UN HABITUé. Après des passages au De Roma et au Sfinks Mixed, la star malienne de la guitare sera à nouveau en Belgique pour lancer son dernier album Kharifa (ce qui se traduit librement par « ce que l’on m’a donné »).
ON NE PEUT S’EN LASSER ! On se réjouit de le voir jouer sa guitare comme une harpe et de l’entendre chanter du blues sur les sons groove du groupe qui l’accompagne depuis 1988.

EIGEN BAAS. Op Pukkelpop was de Lift véél te klein voor de rappende poëet met het steentje in zijn schoen, en de liefde dus heel groot. “’t Is om te houden van je,” klonk het gemeend van op zijn vouwladder, die hij tussen de fans had opengeklapt.
POËTISCH GEZAAG? Integendeel: knap geboetseerde, maar ongedwongen in het West-Vlaams opgestelde beeldtaal blijft ook op Casco, midden oktober zijn tweede album, zijn handelsmerk.

25/10: Kate Tempest -- hip-hop --

APPROBATION. Hâtivement associée à la scène hip-hop, Kate Tempest est à la fois poète et dramaturge, héroïne du slam et émissaire de la classe ouvrière. En deux disques influencés par les mythes antiques et les légendes du rap, elle a suscité l’adhésion du public et des critiques.
CONTESTATION. Fille du peuple, la Londonienne se poste au coin de la rue pour observer l’Angleterre d’aujourd’hui. Dèche et Brexit, injustices sociales et failles politiques alimentent ainsi les morceaux du nouveau The Book of Traps and Lessons, un disque contestataire bourré de punchlines d’inspiration littéraire.

28 & 29/10: Yungblud -- wild card --

PUT THE FREAKS UP FRONT. “My personality got fucked up by the Adderall / Got called an alien for bein’ myself / I ain’t got the patience to be someone else,” Dominic Harrison aka Yungblud sings on his latest single. As a child, the madcap from Doncaster had to take medication to control his behaviour, and it fucked with his mind. Today, he is just as much a spokesperson for Generation Z as Billie Eilish: it’s okay to be a freak.
21ST CENTURY ROCK ‘N’ ROLL. At this year’s Rock Werchter festival, in his baby doll and pink socks, Yungblud looked like an ostentatious rascal who thinks he’s reinvented rock ‘n’ roll, but if there is one person who can make rock popular among millennials who also love EDM and hip hop, then it’s this hyperactive kid.

29/10: Theon Cross -- jazz --

TUBA OR NOT TUBA? At the Pukkelpop festival last year, Theon Cross catapulted Sons of Kemet to the stars with the pumping bass tones from his gleaming tuba. The guru of the London jazz scene Shabaka Hutchings watched how his lieutenant played a wild solo and saw that it was good.
CROSSOVER? At the beginning of this year, Theon Cross debuted under his own name with Fyah, which he recorded with drummer Moses Boyd and saxophonist Nubya Garcia. Pitchfork described it as “a fiery crossover of free jazz, dub, hip hop, soca, grime, and other sounds from the Afro-Caribbean diaspora.”

29/10: Freddie Gibbs -- hip-hop --

FULL METAL JACKIT. Aux abords du lac Michigan, dans l’Indiana, Fredrick Tipton s’est métamorphosé en Freddie Gibbs en une mixtape intitulée Full Metal Jackit. Depuis, le rappeur a fait du chemin. Relocalisé à Los Angeles, il soigne son style et aiguise son flow sur des productions signées Madlib. En 2014, les deux hommes signent Piñata, un album à ranger dans les classiques du rap alternatif.
2019, L’ODYSSÉE DE L’ESPACE. Producteur réputé, Madlib concocte quelques beats à la demande de Kanye West. Insatisfait, ce dernier bazarde les sons. Sauvées in extremis de la poubelle, ces perles soul-funk se retrouvent à présent sur les morceaux interstellaires de Bandana, deuxième épisode des aventures de Madlib et Freddie Gibbs.

31/10 & 1/11: the van jets -- rock --

THE PAST? The Van Jets wonnen Humo’s Rock Rally in de tijd dat de dieren nog spraken en de gitaren nog gierden. Voor de fans van pop- encyclopedieën: dat was in 2004.
THE FUTURE? Vijftien jaar verder en Ostend’s finest trekt de stekker uit de future. Maar niet zonder een afscheidstournee, die eindigt met twee uitsmijters op de plek waar Belgische bands groot worden maar ook ten grave worden gedragen – de Ancienne Belgique.

5/11: Daniil Trifonov -- classical music --

ARGERIICH. The fact that music critics can’t find enough superlatives for a young pianist, is pretty common. But when even Martha Argerich, the grande dame of the piano, is all praise, that is unique. And it is something that the aforementioned critics can’t stop mentioning either when they are talking about Daniil Trifonov.
FOR THE MOTHERLAND. He might have won loads of piano competitions in 2011 with his Chopin renditions, but these days Trifonov focuses on the Russian Masters. His latest album, released by Deutsche Grammophon, is all about Rachmaninoff , and in Flagey he will go for Scriabin and Prokofiev.

6/11: Sam Fender -- rock --

WHO'S THE BOSS? “Bruce Springsteen, if he was a millennial from the UK,” is how Rolling Stone described the 25-year-old poster boy of the British rock scene earlier this month. Listen to his song “Hypersonic Missiles” and you’ll agree.
SELLING OUT? Sam Fender has both his name and his handsome face going for him, but he also comes up with catchy songs that can make rock music appealing to a broad audience again without selling out.

7/11: Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah -- jazz --

THAT’S QUITE A MOUTHFUL. Yes, the grandson of Big Chief Donald Harrison, Sr., one of the most legendary Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans, now combines his American with his West-African name. In fact, the trumpet player and band leader was born in the same city as Wynton Marsalis and would never renounce his roots.
SO HE’S A TRADITIONALIST? Forget it, his ninth studio album Ancestral Recall reconciles the past and present of jazz. “I’m not just trying to get people to move, I’m trying to get them to think,” we hear in his stretch music, as he calls his conscientious fusion of the classical and the new.

LIMIT TO YOUR LOVE. Dosering is altijd al het sleutelwoord geweest in de hoogsensitieve soundscapes van de Britse producer en singer-songwriter, die vanuit Los Angeles onder anderen Travis Scott, André 3000 én Rosalía wist te overtuigen om mee te werken aan zijn nieuwe album Assume form.
BAREFOOT IN THE PARK. Wees de stille getuige van hoe Blake niet alleen de hippe Catalaanse zangeres van haar sokken blaast en midscheeps in het hart raakt met wat misschien wel zijn allerbeste album is.

C’EST QUI LE KING ? À Bruxelles, les rois du rap semblent se multiplier : Roméo Elvis, Damso, Zwangere Guy... Cette fois-ci, c’est au tour d’Hamza Al-Farissi – Hamza pour les intimes – de réclamer son trône au Palais 12.
MÉRITE-T-IL UNE COURONNE ?  Le petit prince de Laeken est certainement le roi de l’autotune, un amour qu’il partage d’ailleurs avec ses frères du milieu hip-hop d’Atlanta, genre Young Thug. Ils s’accordent parfaitement à son flow plutôt RnB. Par ici la couronne !

13/11: Oscar Jerome -- jazz --

NEW WAVE. Er lijkt geen einde te komen aan de uitbraak van jong Londens jazztalent. Jerome speelde al gitaar bij het succulente KOKOROKO en laat nu ook zijn soulvolle stem horen.
SPREIDSTAND. Zijn geëngageerde, soms erg funky klinkende tracks staan met één been in het r&b-walhalla van pakweg Gil Scott-Heron en met het andere in modernere sferen, geboetseerd door J Dilla en de broken beats-scene, zoals de single ‘Gravitate’ onlangs nog aangaf.

16/11: Cocaine Piss -- rock --

SEX, DRUGS... The name of this band from Liège smacks of doping and urine tests, and Cocaine Piss lives up to it. Beneath the layers of electric guitar, the four-piece produces gut-wrenching, mind-blowing punk.
AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL. Recorded with producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Breeders), the new tracks by Cocaine Piss are driven by the infernal rhythms of singer Aurélie Poppins, official screamer for this ear-splitting rock ‘n’ roll project. Turn on, tune in, and drop out.

18/11: Vampire Weekend -- indie pop --

DESCENDANT NEW-YORKAIS. En quelques chansons irrésistibles, Vampire Weekend a planté ses crocs dans la Grosse Pomme. Depuis New York, les mélodies du groupe marchent dans les pas de Paul Simon, suivant à la trace les préceptes de l’album Graceland. De quoi marquer son territoire. Quelque part entre l’Afrique et l’Amérique.
ASCENDANT HIPSTER. Polo Ralph Lauren, gueule d’ange, Ezra Koenig apparaît à présent comme le seul maître à bord du navire Vampire Weekend. Entre gendre idéal et hipster guindé, le chanteur délivre Father of the Bride, un quatrième album pop et coloré qui, sous ses airs joyeux, dépeint un monde à la dérive.

22/11: Ictus & Jérôme Noetinger -- avant-garde --

EINSTEIN BRAIN. Last season, the Brussels contemporary ensemble successfully toured a cult opera by Philip Glass with Suzanne Vega and Collegium Vocale. Now, four members are collaborating with Jérôme Noetinger to perform new, smaller work by the Swiss composer and sound artist Antoine Chessex.
RETRO AUDIOPHILIA. We are going to listen because we are curious to see how the French guest musician blends electronica and the Revox reel to reel tape recorder, a vintage gem that is enjoying a revival, with cello, trombone, percussion, and a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer.

HOORAY! Noonah Eze alias Black Mamba heeft radioshows op Studio Brussel, draait in de clubs die ertoe doen en strooide de voorbije festivalzomer weer kwistig met urban beats.
TALENTSPOTSTER. Op Rock Werchter was het multitalent uit Sint-Niklaas nog de coole dj van dienst achter een bijzonder mondige Miss Angel. Op haar eigen partyconcept trekt ze te midden van haar geliefkoosde r&b-, hiphop-, dancehall-, trap- en afrohousebeats een nog breder blik urban talent open.

26/11: Charli XCX -- pop --

LE LIEN. Love It d’Icona Pop, Fancy d’Iggy Azalea, Same Old Love de Selena Gomez ? Toutes ces chansons ont été écrites par Charlotte Aitchison, qui sous son pseudo Charli XCX fait le lien entre des chansons pop douces comme le miel et des idéalistes du genre SOPHIE, Mykki Blanco et Christine.
DISRUPTOR. La bible de la musique en ligne, Pitchfork, a décrit sa dernière mixtape, au titre sans équivoque Pop 2, comme « une vision de ce que la musique pop pourrait être, le son d’un futur éclectique et hyper-réaliste où l’amour romantique est drôle mais fichu et où la fête est un refuge émotionnel ». La musique idéale pour tester vos nouvelles Disruptor 2.

TOK TOK! Dat betekent de bandnaam in het Lingala. Hun uitbundige concert op Couleur Café kwam deze zomer alvast binnen zonder kloppen. Figuurlijk bedoelen we dat. Nadat ze er hun voortreffelijke debuut Fongola presenteerden, keren de gele pakken uit Kinshasa straks terug met meer dansbare congotronica van de bovenste plank.
KRINGLOOPBEATS. Na Konono N°1 zijn ze het nieuwste exportproduct van de DIY-scene van de Congolese hoofdstad dat eersteklas punkbeats put uit tweedehands instrumenten.

PARLER. La chanteuse béninoise installée à New York et prisée par de nombreuses vedettes occidentales nous avait envoûtés il y a quelques années avec son interprétation passionnée du classique de Talking Heads, Remain In Light.
MARCHER. Accompagnée par l’Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, la diva d’Afrique de l’Ouest interprétera ses œuvres ainsi qu’un cycle de chansons composées pour elle par Philip Glass, qui après une première collaboration avait déclaré : « Angélique, ensemble nous avons construit un pont sur lequel personne n’avait marché auparavant. »

OH, CECILIA! Soloists in classical music, they are one of a kind. The flair, the presence, and a diva attitude that would even make Ms. Lauryn Hill look like a sweetie – if there is one star that outshines them all, it’s Cecilia Bartoli. Does she even need an introduction?
YEARLY TRADITION. Bartoli has taken the stage in Bozar every year since 2012. Now don’t let that be a reason for you to skip a year. Because the Italian mezzo-soprano likes to switch things up. In 2017 she focused on baroque repertoire, last year it was all about Vivaldi. This time she will time travel to the eighteenth century.

18/12: MiXMONK -- jazz --

VERLEDEN? Het trio van saxofonist Robin Verheyen, pianist Bram Delooze en drummer Joey Baron ontstond in het kader van 100 jaar jazz als een ode aan het werk van Thelonious Monk.
TOEKOMST? Op hun eerste titelloze album intrigeerden de originele composities vaak al meer dan hun toch verfrissende Monk-bewerkingen. In de toekomst zal het oeuvre van de Amerikaanse jazzlegende nog veel meer als lanceerplatform voor eigen(zinnig) werk dienen.
