When the Senegal-born, Berlin-based Kuwaiti multidisciplinary artist Monira Al Qadiri was staying in Japan, she had her soul read by a woman who practices necromancy.
The good news was that Al Qadiri carries forty spirits of her Saudi ancestors within her. The bad news is that they were all heavily bearded men with bloody pasts.
The result is the performance Phantom Beard, in which Al Qadiri travels to the past and the future of the Middle East, ironically tackling pressing gender-related questions along the way.
