The Stefania tunnel will only open in the second half of the summer holidays. Whereas it was to open in May. But, it will be fully renovated, says Transport Minister Pascal Smet (SP.A).

The temporary renovation was supposed to be completed towards the end of May. Followed by a full renovation.

However, the Brussels government has decided to carry out a full renovation straight away. As a result the tunnel will be closed in the summer holidays. "We ask for a little patience, but at least the tunnel will not have to be closed for one year", says Smet. Additional work will be carried out at night and during school holidays.

The works take longer than planned owing to unforeseen circumstances. "We have the original plans, but they're different from what has been built", says Smet.

Smet: 'Renovate all tunnels'
Smet also said that the government approved the long-awaited tunnel plan. Over the next 15 years between 40 and 50 million euros will be invested in the renovation of all tunnels.

"We will solve the tunnel problem", says Smet. "The Brussels government has decided to renovate tunnels in very poor condition first."

Most of the works will be carried out at night and during school holidays. Details of the plan will be presented in parliament on Monday.
