Songhoy Blues was discovered in exile by Damon Albarn (Gorillaz, Blur), whose Africa Express seeks to stimulate collaboration between western and African musicians.
This began an unstoppable rise, uniting people irrespective of ethnicity or race. Two years ago, Songhoy Blues debuted with Music in Exile, which they presented at the Ancienne Belgique. The young musicians are from the northern part of Mali, the former Songhai Empire, which in the sixteenth century stretched across the entire desert region of West Africa. You might describe Songhai music as the perfect bridge between the Bambara from southern Mali and the Tuareg from the desert. Songhoy Blues also throw in bits of hip hop and even Jimi Hendrix!
