Global jazz meets local classical in 'Interstices'

The trumpet player and composer Amir ElSaffar is coming to Bozar for the second time this season. He was here in November with his jazz orchestra Rivers of Sound. This week, he is performing a new creation along with nine musicians from Ictus.

Interstices reconciles the microtonality of the Brussels-based contemporary classical music ensemble with the Middle Eastern maqam traditions that he masters like no other. As the son of an Iraqi father and an American mother, ElSaffar not only grew up in two different musical worlds, but as a contemporary and exceptionally lyrical jazz musician, he also gracefully explores new paths.
