Krump is gaining ground so fast in Brussels that Lezarts Urbains is devoting a full day to it, along with the big names of this street dance that is as expressive as it is spiritual.

Krump isn’t something you explain; it’s something you feel. It’s pure, raw, concentrated emotion; an elevation fuelled by sheer energy. Born in the disadvantaged neighbourhoods of Los Angeles in the early 2000s, the dance style is alive and kicking in Belgium – thriving in fierce battles and high-energy sessions – yet often flies under the radar. To celebrate its dynamism, Lezarts Urbains is dedicating an entire evening to it.

Kicking things off is a panel discussion featuring beatmakers Morf and La Joconde, hosted by Blanche Pembe (aka Dark Eye) of Krump Belgium. They’ll delve into creating krump’s signature sound, exploring its defining features and driving force. A short archive film focusing on the Belgian krump scene will showcase the sheer talent of the country’s krumpers.

Without limits

Then it’s time for performances. Catch Ruthless, the all-female collective, presenting Family Ties – choreographed by Hendrickx Ntela (see photo) and dedicated to Kendrick Lamar – alongside In No Sense, choreographed by Siham Ennajary, which incorporates elements of rock, breakdance, and krump.

Highlighting krump’s versatile and organic nature – its ability to adapt to any music style –, dancer Wild will perform to the sounds of Architecture, a band fusing jazz and slam. A DJ set from La Joconde will round off the evening in style.
