When the 16-year-old Sam Amidon heard the old field recordings that Harry Smith collected for his Anthology of American Folk Music (1952), he discovered a new world.

Even to the American folk singer, who grew up in the Appalachians between fiddles and banjos, they sounded out of this world, and at least as strange as the free jazz of Albert Ayler or Ornette Coleman.

It was thus not a great surprise when, after the Antwerp Americana club The Golden Glows last and also this year, the Ancienne Belgique asked him to revisit some of the 84 primal recordings in the American folk bible from a contemporary perspective.
