Birds of Prey easily overshadows Suicide Squad, the supervillain film which introduced the character of Harley Quinn four years ago.
The complete title – Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn – betrays that the supervillain from Suicide Squad (Margot Robbie as a crazy punk who loves violence) is learning to stand on her own two feet. The secondary characters like Black Canary and Cassandra Cain are emancipatory, but don’t expect a feminist tract.
Director Cathy Yan doesn’t hesitate to give us cartoonish violence, vibrant colours, and fun action sequences. Birds of Prey easily overshadows Suicide Squad.
