La Llorona: a gripping political ghost film

Following his stunning film debut Ixcanul and the honourable Temblores, the Guatemalan director Jayro Bustamante has confirmed his talent with a gripping political ghost film that is inspired by the horrific history of Guatemala.

A sadistic former general (based on dictator Efraín Ríos Montt) with a genocide on his conscience barricades himself in his country house. It is besieged by Guatemalans demanding justice. The noise reaches the ill man, but the message does not. He has lost all grip on reality. Is he held hostage by the ghosts of the past or are the strange phenomena related to the new maid Alma? La Llorona is a fascinating, sombre, and atmospheric film.
