Na anderhalf jaar kunnen we eindelijk weer zingen en dansen, moshen en sjansen in de Brusselse concertzalen. Op een soundtrack van binnenlandse bangers als Zwangere Guy, STUFF. en David Numwami, maar ook van internationale toppers, van Víkingur Ólafsson over Charles Lloyd tot Róisín Murphy.
FR/ Après un an et demi, il est enfin à nouveau permis de chanter et de se déhancher dans les salles de concert bruxelloises. Sur le son de vedettes locales comme Roméo Elvis, Whispering Sons et Antoine Pierre, et sur les beats de stars internationales comme Fatoumata Diawara et Róisín Murphy en passant par Clara Luciani.

- ONVERMOED DUO. Na hun passage op The Sound of the Belgian Underground vroeg de artistiek directeur van de AB contratenor Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe en producer Laurens Mariën hun operastem en elektronica eens in de studio te combineren.

Het resultaat, Spectacles, gaat over de liefde, is met een extra portie drama geïnjecteerd door Louise Van den Eede en wordt live met dans, veel rook en muzikale bijdragen van Lander Gyselinck, Mattias De Craene, David Numwami en Jasper Segers verweven tot een theatraal, euh… spektakelstuk.

- ODYSSEY. During his improvisation session with Han Bennink and Wolter Wierbos, pianist Kris Defoort seemed to catch his breath at Jazz Middelheim after the struggle the five-year journey writing this opera was, including heart attacks, coma, pandemics and, if necessary, postponement.
- TURF. The novel The Time of Our Singing by the American author Richard Powers is extremely topical. Defoort, together with librettist Peter van Kraaij, cast, chamber orchestra, jazz ensemble, children’s and youth choirs, illustrates how a racially mixed family moves forward, but is ultimately driven apart.

- LET’S GROOVE. Figure de proue de la scène jazz bruxelloise, la flûtiste Esinam Dogbatse met sa science du groove au service d’une musique sans frontières. Entre racines africaines, influences hip-hop, traditions occidentales et tropicalisme.
- À L’INFINI. De retour avec l’album Shapes in Twilights of Infinity, Esinam s’associe avec W.E.R.F., un label connu pour ses bonnes pioches et sa vision décomplexée du jazz.

- CANDY? He once formed the cult group Le Colisée, played with Frànçois & the Atlas Mountains and was then taken on by Charlotte Gainsbourg and Sébastien Tellier. Now, David Numwami is the newest candy of the Brussels music scene.
- DANDY! With the EP Numwami World, the Rwandan-born singer has created a parallel universe full of dreamy R&B, feather light French chansons and dandyesque pop, a haven of cotton candy pink contours as an antidote to gloomy thoughts.

- GÉNÉRATION ROMANTIQUE. Les morceaux de Moji et Sboy offrent une alternative au rap francophone. Entre chagrins d’amour et romantisme sous haute tension, le flow se délivre ici en douceur.
- CŒUR AVEC LES DOIGTS. Les deux Liégeois se distinguent du tout-venant hip-hop à la faveur d’une proposition musicale à fleur de peau. Les influences de Post Malone ou du regretté Lil Peep traversent d’ailleurs les douze titres de Temps d’Aime, une nouvelle mixtape ultra sensible et riche en collaborations (Luv Resval, Geeeko).

- ... IN HET DONKER. Met haar complexloze pop past Froukje in het rijtje Merol, S10 en andere jonge zangeressen die een nieuwe wind doen waaien door de Nederlandse popscene, en die de verlangens, twijfels en verwachtingen van een jonge generatie verklanken.

- COCKTAIL À L’EAU SALÉE. Le groupe de Brighton met le rock dans tous ses états via un premier album déviant et excitant à souhait.

Renaissance music, 20th century Messiaen, baroque Buxtehude, and of course a spotlight on that other birthday boy Josquin des Prez.

- NIEUW TRIO. In het jaar waarin hij dertig werd en met MiXMONK een puntgaaf concert gaf op Jazz Middelheim, lanceert de eeuwig jong uitziende Brusselse pianist Invisible Silence, een trio met de ervaren New Yorkse drummer Eric McPherson en de beloftevolle Berlijnse bassist Felix Henkelhausen.
- NIEUW REPERTOIRE. Een gestreamde set na een residentie in De Bijloke was hun eerste publieke teken van leven. Met publiek in de zaal kunnen deze originele composities die de grenzen verkennen tussen eigentijdse en traditionele jazz alleen maar aan dynamiek winnen.

- METAMORPHOSIS. The band from Ghent that liked to hold long jam sessions, incorporate rock influences into a jazz hut and impress live, shifted its focus to studio experimentation, electronics and songs on their third album In Velvet.
- WITH ONE MAN MORE. Nonetheless, their narrative contains often rousing instrumentals and is now performed by five rather than four Nordmen who continue to build undercurrent tension and pace. The melancholic tenor saxophone parts by Mattias De Craene sporadically press the pause button.

- LE PRINCE EST DE RETOUR. Tête de série du rap bruxellois, Roméo Elvis est de retour sur Instagram, mais aussi dans les salles de concert.
- QUE LA FÊTE COMMENCE. Relativement discret au cours des derniers mois, le frère d’Angèle reprend du service. Après deux singles lancés en éclaireurs, le rappeur belge se lance sous le feu des projecteurs avec deux concerts d’affilée au Festival des Libertés. Un retour aux affaires qui préfigure l’arrivée d’un nouvel album...

- FAMILIE. Grootvader Jan zong opera. Vader Chris speelt jazz. Zelf is ze genoemd naar de ballade die John Coltrane schreef voor zijn eerste vrouw en debuteerde ze solo met een ep waarop ze het verlies van haar zus aan kanker verwerkt.
- THERAPIE. Omdat zingen voor de ex-vocaliste van Isbells therapeutisch is, wordt luisteren dat voor haar publiek. Dat was al omvergeblazen door haar lockdowncovers en kan zich nu ook live laten ontroeren door haar diep snijdende alt.

Aside from collaborations with legends such as Herbie Hancock, Bobby Womack, and Mulatu Astatke, Fatoumata Diawara has recently recorded with Gorillaz and Disclosure. She is set to take the world by storm.

- ... REIZEN LIGETI & ZN. Een wereld vol rode zones, maar toch kan er dankzij de Ligeti’s geglobetrot worden. In Bozar schippert het Brussels Philharmonic tussen vaders San Francisco en zoons Burkina Faso. Voor de heimweegevoeligen is er na zo’n intercontinentale trip nog Lontano, het stuk dat The shining en Shutter island zo unheimisch maakt.

14/11: Black Pumas -- soul --
- DRESSEURS RÉTRO. Venus du Texas, le chanteur Eric Burton et le guitariste Adrian Quesada se sont révélés sous le pelage de Black Pumas. Le duo sublime les traditions soul-funk à travers des mélodies directement importées des années septante.
- AU GOÛT DU JOUR. Un peu comme Leon Bridges ou Curtis Harding, ils recyclent les saveurs d’antan pour imposer une musique au goût du jour. Portés par le public, les Black Pumas atteignent aujourd’hui des sommets avec, à la clé, deux nominations aux Grammy Awards.

- JE BENT JONG... De band rond Limburgse rockgod-in-wording Joachim Liebens heeft nog maar twee singles uit, waaronder het van de teen angst druipende ‘Teen rebel’. Maar ze zijn genoeg om te doen uitkijken naar meer. Veel meer.
- ... EN JE WILT WAT. De Belgische rockscene kon nog wel wat peper gebruiken. Net op tijd komt deze jonge hond aanzetten met zijn bastaardversie van de ijle postpunk van DIIV, de paddenstoelenpsychedelica van MGMT en de epische gitaren van The War on Drugs.

- HIPSTER. In the wake of 8: Kindred Spirits (Live From the Lobero), recorded to mark his 80th birthday in his hometown of Santa Barbara, the jazz legend with the hip sunglasses and the affable tenor sax found his umpteenth breath and best form again, as evidenced at Jazz Middelheim in 2019.
- HIPPIE. Assisted by pianist Gerald Clayton, double bass player Reuben Rogers and drummer Kendrick Scott, the man who started out in the bands of Chico Hamilton, Cannonball Adderley and Keith Jarrett, and later became one of the spiritual fathers of hippie jazz, always looks to the future.

- THE LITTLE PIANO PLAYER. Stella Chiweshe is the queen of the mbira, a thumb piano with metal “keys” and a wooden soundboard, a sacred instrument that was traditionally made and played by the Shona of Zimbabwe.
- THUMBS UP! Stella Chiweshe became proficient on the mbira in the 1960s, when the regime still prohibited women from playing instruments. She remains one of the few female instrumentalists in her country. And she can sing too.

- LESS IS... De jongste Rock Rally-winnares had de drukste festivalzomer van allemaal, terwijl haar eerste album pas begin november verschijnt, zo tuk was iedereen op haar schijnbaar achteloos ingezongen liedjes die een sobere, tijdloze klasse uitstralen.
- ... MORE. Ook het debuut dat ze met producer Koen Gisen opnam, focust bewust op de essentie. Tracks vertrekken van stem en gitaar, met hier en daar de cello van Febe Lazou, wat klarinet en dwarsfluit.

- RÉVÉLATION PSYCHÉDÉLIQUE. Globe-trotteuse, la Londonienne Aria Wells s’est exfiltrée au Pérou et au Mexique. Où elle a travaillé dans des bars et dans un centre de yoga, avant de se métamorphoser en Greentea Peng. C’est sous cet avatar aromatique qu’elle mélange soul, R&B, hip-hop et substances psychédéliques.
- RÉVÉLATION DE L’ANNÉE ? Plébiscitée par la BBC, invitée par Mike Skinner pour chanter chez The Streets, Greentea Peng vient de publier Man Made, un premier album irrésistible.

- BEVALLING. Door corona is de hernieuwde intrede van de Brusselse rapkeizer in de AB een olifantsdracht geworden, hij moet zelfs eerst nog bevallen van een nieuwe Stikstof-plaat, maar we kijken er niet minder naar uit.
- PAPA. Ondanks de wurggreep van corona bleef Papa ZG voortdurend in de aandacht, dankzij een XXL-versie van zijn laatste plaat, een gepimpte livestream en een Di-GUY-tale avatar. Maar er gaat niets boven the real thing.

- QUI EST CE BRUXELLOIS... Influencée par les fêtes de mariage, le raï et les traditions folkloriques de Marrakech, la musique de TiiwTiiw – Iliass Barni à l’état civil – pèse des millions de vues sur YouTube. Star au Maroc, il est le porte-drapeau de la jeunesse maghrébine en Belgique.
- ...AU MILLIARD DE VUES ? L’ensemble des clips vidéo du chanteur et producteur belgo-marocain dépasse aujourd’hui la barre du milliard de vues sur les réseaux sociaux. Un score qui permet à TiiwTiiw de boxer dans la même catégorie qu’Angèle, Damso ou Roméo Elvis. De passage sur la scène de La Madeleine, l’artiste en profite pour dévoiler son premier album solo.

- TALK OF THE TOWN. PRAISED by Phoebe Bridgers and Billie Eilish, her debut album Collapsed in Sunbeams, released in January, made poet and singer Anaïs Marinho aka Arlo Parks the next big thing in Britain.
- HEART ON THE SLEEVE. The first European headlining tour of the singer-songwriter with the gentle jazzy voice, soulful comforting recitation and candid poetic lyrics was cut short by corona. In December the 21-year-old singer from London will prove why she cannot just be a role model for her own Z generation.

12 > 31/12: Norma -- opera --
- BÊTE DE CONCOURS. Le compositeur italien Vincenzo Bellini a écrit dix opéras pendant sa courte vie, mais Norma est sans aucun doute sa meilleure bête de concours. Une histoire qui reste actuelle. Sur l’amour, la jalousie et l’oppression sociale.
- CHAPEAU BAS. Et c’est l’artiste visuel et ancien créateur de chapeaux Christophe Coppens qui a dirigé la régie, les costumes et le décor de cet immense classique. S’il y a bien un opéra à voir cet automne, c’est celui-ci.

16/12: Whispering Sons -- rock --
- WHODUNIT. Zangeres Fenne Kuppens bereidde de teksten voor het nieuwe album Several others planmatig voor, zoals een detective een moord probeert op te lossen. Met trefwoorden tegen de muur, inclusief mogelijke linken.
- TRUE CRIME. Meer uitgebeend en directer dan debuut Image en met als centrale thema het gevecht tussen wie we zijn en wie we willen zijn, transformeert de band de obligate new-wavevoorbeelden in een krachtdadige eigen sound. De clip van ‘Heat’ is een voorafspiegeling van hoe intens het live toe kan gaan.

Float Fall
In 2012 stonden de sterren gunstig voor Float Fall. Het Brusselse droompopduo rond Rozanne Descheemaeker en Ruben Lefever haalde de finale van Humo’s Rock Rally en zijn eerste single ‘Someday’ werd een radiohit, tot op Amerikaanse radio’s toe. (30/9, Ancienne Belgique)
